If Sir Jim Ratcliffe was shocked by the standards at Carrington, he has work cut out with Old Trafford.

When it rains it pours: Old Trafford's flooding once again sums up Manchester United's downfall (2)

The infamous Old Trafford leaks burst open worse than ever this weekend as Manchester United lost 1-0 to Arsenal, with the pictures of flooding from inside the stadium only further symbolising the club’s downfall under the Glazer ownership.

Although the home defeat meant that the Gunners could still potentially go on to beat Man City to the title, it was hard for fans not to turn their attention to the deluge of rainwater that began dumping on various parts of the stadium, which continues to look more and more out of date every year.

It is by no means the first time we’ve seen Man United’s home ground leaking – even sparking the ‘Old Trafford is falling down’ chant from opposing supporters throughout the EFL – but the footage captured this Sunday might be some of the most damning.

This is not the kind of conditions fitting of somewhere long referred to as the ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

In truth, Erik ten Hag‘s defence has been leaky all season, having conceded a record 82 goals since the start of the campaign and famously blowing multiple two-goal leads in various games, but these kinds of scenes do feel rather symbolic of the underlying problems at United.

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly sent around a mass email condemning the “disgraceful” state of the Carrington Training Complex earlier this month and it seems he now has his most telling example of how the club has been neglected, right down to its infrastructure and the most basic things.

Seeing their food hygiene rating drop from five stars to just one after serving undercooked meat is yet another example of how not only have the facilities been left to rot but the standards have slipped over the past 10-11 years.

It’s not just that the brand of football being seen isn’t up to the level of Sir Alex Ferguson, it’s that literal debris has been spotted falling in the concourse, transfers have been botched and the outrage from fans has become so great that they broke into the stadium whilst protesting just a few short years ago.

The list goes on and what’s even more indicative of this gradual downfall than anything is that fans now find themselves in the unpleasant position of having to potentially swallow losses against rivals like Arsenal in the hopes that they might stop City from winning a record-fourth division title in a row.

Over the past decade or so, the ‘noisy neighbours’ have gone on to become treble winners, Liverpool returned to their former glory with a Premier League and another European title, Arsenal could be set to do the same and the Red Devils simply aren’t the threat they once were.

It seems almost hard to believe that Manchester United could still go on to win back-to-back trophies in ten Hag’s first two seasons if they manage to get past Pep Guardiola’s men at Wembley on Saturday, 25 May but, for many, it will still remain merely a plaster slapped over a hole just waiting burst open again.

The Old Trafford flooding isn’t just proof of the shocking state of disrepair it finds itself in but is emblematic of what the Glazers have allowed the club to slip into and just how much work needs to be done by Ratcliffe, INEOS and the new figures working behind the scenes at the club.

Stefan Ortega hailed as Manchester City’s ‘saviour’ as they take control of the title raceDanny JonesWhen it rains it pours: Old Trafford's flooding once again sums up Manchester United's downfall (4)

Manchester City’s second keeper Stefan Ortega has been hailed as their saviour following his heroics in this week’s penultimate Premier League fixture, with a singular moment that could have very well decided this season’s title race.

Ortega has been relied upon multiple times this season, both in cup competitions and several league fixtures when Ederson has been ruled out – which is exactly what happened following a concerning head injury with around 20 minutes of normal time to go – but never has he stepped up quite like this.

With the Brazilian shot-stopper being forced off for his own good (a decision that left him in tears on the bench), the backup keeper had to play what could prove to be the most important half-hour of football for City this season, with the Blues have never won or even scored at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It wasn’t long before he was called into action either, as Spurs star and regular scorer whenever the two sides meet, Son, found himself through on goal only for Ortega to produce what will likely go down as the most as the most important save of the season:

Say what you will about the South Korean’s composure at the moment but that is nothing short of a sensational stop given the circ*mstances.

Manager Pep Guardiola said as much too, insisting to media after the game that “in the one-against-one, he’s one of the best goalkeepers I have ever seen in my life”, adding, “It’s the German culture; stand up, don’t go down. It’s so really, really good… He’s so reliable.”

Pep didn’t mince his words when it came to describing how important that moment was either, stating simply: “Stefan Ortega has saved us. Otherwise, Arsenal are Premier League champions”.

He also lauded City’s keeper trainer, Xabier Mancisidor – who received a yellow card on the night for his protests over the sickening collision that saw Ederson hooked off despite trying to play on – crediting him with the excellent decision in bringing their number 18 to the club.

"They were playing for the consequences of the result" 🗣

Ortega could very well go down as the Aguero of the 2023/24 season with that singular moment, with Liverpool legend turned pundit Jamie Carragher going so far on the night as to declare the goalkeeper as having “won Manchester City the title”.

While he might have called a touch early given that the Blues and Arsenal have one massive game each to play just yet, both against sides that have struggled this season too, that save from Ortega could prove to be as important as the Gerrard slip or any other tide-turning moment in a title race.

Guardiola has admitted that Ederson’s injury doesn’t look good, admitting that “he can’t see properly” after being left with a visible black eye following the clash, meaning that he is unlikely to play their last game this Sunday.

Nevertheless, as Ortega proved on the night, he isn’t just capable of filling in for the first-team starter when needed – we can’t think of many rotation keepers who have made themselves more worthy of seeing out a season than the 31-year-old did on Tuesday night.

With just West Ham and Everton left to play for the top two, respectively, who knows what could happen on the final day of the season this weekend?

Things could still very come down to goal difference even, but Stefan Ortega did more than his part to make sure that the champions go into the home stretch in control and with Arsenal needing a miracle to stand a chance of beating them to the title.

Man United cancel end-of-season awards dinner as focus turns to Manchester derby FA Cup finalDanny JonesWhen it rains it pours: Old Trafford's flooding once again sums up Manchester United's downfall (6)

Manchester United have reportedly cancelled their usual end-of-season awards dinner as focus shifts to a crucial FA Cup final against Man City which could prove to be make or break for Erik ten Hag after a difficult season.

With the club on course for what could end up being their worst statistical season ever, having already made their worst start to a season in terms of losses since the 1930s, there’s hardly been much for Man United fans to celebrate over the past year or so.

Capable of fast, fluid attacking play in one moment and then stagnant sideways passing combined with a leaky defence in the next, the Red Devils have put their supporters through the full gamut in ten Hag‘s second season.

As a result, according to The Athletic, the club has decided to scrap their usual awards ceremony which was originally scheduled for next Monday and turn all eyes to the cup final on Saturday, 25 May.

NEW @TheAthleticFC : Manchester United cancel club’s end-of-season awards dinner, scheduled for May 20. Club say it is because they don’t want distractions before men’s FA Cup final, but comes amid dreadful form & pressure mounting on Erik Ten Hag. https://t.co/kpqBsNzVAI

While the Man United Women’s team managed to round off a similarly challenging campaign with an all-important piece of silverware – the first FA Cup in their history and one which could also keep their head coach Marc Skinner in a job – the men still have a huge mountain to climb on their end.

As the outlet goes on to reveal, the decision has been made as the administration feels that the players “should not have any distractions in the week of the game”, especially one which could prove to be the only saving grace during this campaign. There is no indication as to who had the final say on the matter.

Having crashed out of the Champions League, broken all manner of unwanted records, and now desperately hoping to at least qualify for the Europa or Conference League (a small consolation that many fans don’t even really want), it’s largely been a season most Reds will want to forget.

Awards voted for by peers, coaches and fans will still be handed out but the awards dinner itself, which also celebrates those emerging from United’s legendary youth academy, has been binned in a move that probably better suits the current tone around the club.

It isn’t the first time the decision has been made either, as former interim United manager Ralf Rangnick also called off the awards dinner when he came in as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s replacement towards the end of the 2021/22 season.

The significance of the annual awards dinner itself has been played down and smirked at in the recent past too, with Jose Mourinho famously creating a new ‘Manager’s Player of the Season’award for Scott McTominay towards the end of his turbulent time in Manchester.

It’s likely that many of the players also aren’t exactly in high enough spirits to justify an end-of-season awards ceremony either, with the literal flooding inside Old Trafford this weekend only exacerbating how the condition of the stadium as a metaphor for the club at this moment in time.

It’s now less than a fortnight until United take on the historic rivals in the second consecutive Manchester derby FA Cup final, one which weighs heavily in the favour of those in blue. Can they possibly make it past the high-flying treble-winners?
