'Suddenly half a dozen police cars came flying down Nottingham Road'

Jackie Watson, 58, who works as a carer and lives in Wycliffe Road, said: “I went to work this morning at the same time as usual and suddenly half a dozen police cars came flying down Nottingham Road. They blocked the road off and we could see a commotion near the pub. Within five minutes the place was a standstill and there was lots of police.”

'Unimaginable that something like this could happen in Alfreton'

Geoff Rodgers, 76, a local resident who lives near Nottingham Road, said: “We see too many nasty crimes on the news nowadays and it’s unimaginable that something like this could happen in Alfreton. I’m worried for the young ones, people used to fight and deal with issues but everything seems to be so serious nowadays."

'There must’ve been around 12 police cars here' this morning

Resident who lives across the road from the scene, who did not wish to be named, said: “It's sad that we still see things like this in the world, let alone in Alfreton.

“There were kids going to school when whatever happened took place this morning. Old people are terrified and they don’t know what to tell the young ones.

“There must’ve been around 12 police cars here when we first woke up this morning and police have been here ever since. You could tell how serious it was straight away."

'I don’t think anyone in the area can believe it'

Anne Moss, 76, said: “We’ve lived here on Wycliffe Road for 16 years and have barely seen a police car, let alone a full crime scene. This used to be the best street in Alfreton and it’s still very quiet.

“We get the occasional bit of noise from the pub and the schoolchildren can make a fuss sometimes, but apart from that we have never seen anything like it. I don’t think anyone in the area can believe it."
