From My Mother’s Recipe Box: FudgeCandy

Posted on December 5, 2011 | Leave a comment

Last year around this time in December I posted a week of holiday baking recipes from My Mother’s Recipe Box. And, there are more! So I thought, once again, I’d share some vintage recipes in case you’re looking for something traditional–or different–to have for your holiday parties.

Nothing says “holidays” to me more than fudge. This recipe is from Aunt Vivian Morrison, a relative of my grandma who most likely lived in California. I remember visiting Aunt Irlene Morrison near Yuba City, CA, the summer I was 12. She loaded us up with Kadota figs from a tree in her yard. I’m thinking Aunt Vivian is her daughter-in-law or niece.

When was the last time you found Hershey bars for 5 cents?

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: Quick Breads forThanksgiving

Posted on November 21, 2011 | Leave a comment

If you’re looking for some easy breads for Thanksgiving that double as breakfast food, check out these two recipes from My Mother’s Recipe Box. Who doesn’t like slicing off a warm piece of apple bread in the morning after being stuffed from dinner the night before?

They’re delicious to eat and easy for the cook. And they transport well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: Two Recipes forApples

When I was a kid, I loved candy apples. I think it was mostly the color I liked, but it may have also been that final break-through from the candy to the apple, similar to reaching the chocolate in a Tootsie Pop. Caramel apples, however, were not my favorite. Probably because I had braces. Even today, I don’t have much fondness for the sweetness of caramel. But I know a lot of people do. So, just in time for Halloween, check out this vintage recipe by Mary Morganfrom My Mother’s Recipe Box.

I cropped the photos and made two of them so it’s easier to read the recipe.

And, because so many people are making apple dishes, I thought I’d share a recipe for Apple Crisp by Carolyn, who I believe is my mother’s cousin since she didn’t add her last name to the recipe card.

Enjoy apple picking, and Happy Halloween!

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: Sweets for SummerGatherings

When I think of the Fourth of July, picnics and family gatherings come to mind. It seems to be the American way to celebrate Independence Day.

While I had hoped to find some recipes that included strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or cherries–all fruits that are in season in July where I live–I couldn’t find any except berry-flavored Jell-O recipes inMy Mother’s Recipe Box.I came across a lot of recipes for bananas, apricots, and dates, however, which I will eventually share!

But for the Fourth, I thought some good old-fashioned brownies sounded like one of the most American recipes you could make to celebrate our independence. And I couldn’t resist throwing in my Great Aunt Lily’s Chocolate Eclairs and a recipe for Caramel Custard, which you can complement with some fresh berries!

Enjoy some sweets this weekend during our celebration of freedom!

I subscribe to The Writer’s Almanac, so every day I get an email about what happened on this day in history and in the world of writers, e.g., what writers were born on this day and how he or she became a writer. It’s fascinating and inspiring.

Since today is Memorial Day, and it actually falls on May 30, the original Memorial Day, I read about how the holiday has morphed from “a holiday after the Civil War to honor the Union and Confederate soldiers who had died in battle” to “an extended honor” after World War I to honor all United States soldiers who died in any war to “the last Monday in May.” We can thank Congress’ 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which severed the link between Memorial Day and the original date. From therepeople have lost sight of the original meaning of the holiday–a day for reconciliation and honor. Instead, it has turned into “a holiday for families to remember anyone they have lost (veteran or otherwise), to lay flowers at gravesites, and, in later years, barbecue, shop, and watch the Indianapolis 500.” (Did you see the Indy 500 yesterday?)

I did have a father who was a veteran of WWII, and I thank him in my thoughts for his service, along with all the guys he fought alongside with in the European Theater. But I do like the way Memorial Day has become an opportunity for families to “remember anyone they have lost.”

So I’m going to honor my mother today (also deceased)–lest we forget the imprint our mothers have made upon us–with two recipes for spring. After all, wedding season is around the corner and who would want to miss serving Maid of Honor cake at their next bridesmaids’ tea?

Or, Rhubarb Upside Down Cake, with rhubarb at the peak of the season here in the North Country?

Does anyone know what Monarch Tea-Bisk is? All I can gather from the Web is that it’s like Bisquick–a ready-to-use baking mix for cakes, biscuits, pancakes, etc. I’m sure the Rhubarb Upside Down Cake recipe came from the producer of the Monarch Tea-Bisk since it’s specified as an ingredient.

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: Two Recipes forEaster

Posted on April 17, 2011 | 4 comments

When I was a kid, Easter tradition consisted of an “Easter egg” (i.e., jelly bean) hunt in the living room followed by Easter breakfast, which always included hot cross buns.

I found this recipe for hot cross buns in My Mother’s Recipe Box and thought it would be fun to share it since Easter is next week….just in case you’re looking for a vintage recipe or one that doesn’t require kneading.

For an accompaniment to the buns at breakfast or brunch, you might want to try Crepes Suzette.

What are your traditions at Easter?

I’m not a big chocolate fan unless it’s straight dark chocolate, or a dense, moist brownie or torte. But February is chocolate month, it seems, due to a favorite Hallmark holiday coming up next week. So, you chocoholics….try these vintage recipes from My Mother’s Recipe Box: Dorothy Coon’s Chocolate Cup Cakes and Special Chocolate Cookies.

Okay, so it’s not a baking recipe, but I couldn’t resist this festive walnut candy as my final entry for “A Week of Holiday Baking” from My Mother’s Recipe Box. It’s a unique way to make candied nuts for your holiday parties.

For the rest of this week’s recipes, check out My Mother’s Recipe Box.

And Happy Holidays!

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: StadigCookies

Posted on December 10, 2010 | Leave a comment

I had never heard of Stadig Cookies before and, when I Googled “stadig,” I couldn’t find a definition. So I went to the Google translator and discovered it’s Danish for “still.” If anyone has a story behind this cookie, I’d love to know it. Apparently, it’s a simple almond cookie that looks like shortbread to me. Yum!

From My Mother’s Recipe Box: Peanut ButterCookies

Posted on December 9, 2010 | 2 comments

They may not be traditional holiday cookies, but Peanut Butter Cookies are my absolute favorite cookie, and this recipe from My Mother’s Recipe Box is the one I learned to bake from.

I love the little diagram on the back of the card showing how to do the criss-crosses with a fork.
