The Little Juniata River, sometimes called the "Little J", is a 32.1-mile-long (51.7 km) tributary of the Juniata River in the Susquehanna River watershed of Pennsylvania. It is formed at Altoona by the confluence of several short streams. It flows northeast in the Logan Valley at the foot of Brush Mountain.

What was Juniata named after? ›

Juniata County, named for the river flowing through, was erected from Mifflin County in 1831. Juniata, a Seneca name, originally meant “standing stone”; but a later connotation favors “blue waters.”

The Juniata, especially the Frankstown Branch, became one of the early main travel arteries through the interior of Pennsylvania to the Ohio valley. Trading preceded agriculture as early inducements for settlement along the western Juniata, with several outposts built in key locations in the mid 1700s.

The Juniata River's headwaters originate on the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Front, part of the eastern Continental Divide, at an elevation of ~3,000 feet above sea level.
