Glenda Kinnison Smith and Dean Wood Smith Obituary 2024 - Riser Funeral Homes (2024)

Glenda Delaine Kinnison Jones Smith was born on March 20, 1937, and passed from this world on May 6, 2024. She passed at home on the same land she was born on in Holum, Louisiana, in the community of Pistol Thicket. Her parents were Phillip Nathaniel Kinnison and Evelyn Elizabeth McClung Kinnison. During her life she lived in Holum, Sterlington, Winnsboro, and Alexandria, Louisiana before returning to Holum to live after retirement.

Glenda married Henry (H.D.) Jones and moved to the town of Winnsboro. They were married for 33 years and had two children: Robin Renea Jones and Shawn Daniel Jones. She then married Dean Wood Smith and they were married for 35 years, up until the time of his death on April 22, 2024.

Glenda is survived by her daughter, Robin Jones Marsh; step-sons, Matt Smith and Chris Smith, and her grandchildren: Lauren Corley (Matt), Casey Thompson (Zack), Alex Boudreaux (James); special friends: Allison Hughes (Tony), Sylvia Quaid, Donna Gwin, and cousin, Nina Boudreau Kenney; grandchildren: Abbigail Wiggins (Cameron), Addison Corley, Allison Corley, Gunner Boudreaux, Aubree Boudreaux, Zach Smith, Skyler Hughes, and Samantha, Tristan, A.J., Maggie, and Elle Smith. Additionally, she had two great-grandchildren: Halston and Sutton Wiggins. She was also survived by her brothers and sister: Dwayne (Myrna) Kinnison, Roger (Fran) Kinnison, Michael (Carrie) Kinnison, and Beth Kinnison Toney; and brother-in-law, Edward (Virginia) Jones. Glenda was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Smith and her son, Shawn Jones, as well as Sterling (their animal companion of many years regarded as her favorite child by her other children).

Glenda was a fabulous mother, wonderful wife, and a very talented artist. She was the kind of mother who climbed trees with her children, read to them every day and gave unconditional love. She had a multitude of friends that will miss her greatly. It is fitting that her birthday was usually the first day of Spring. Dean and Glenda were not just married, they were best friends and went almost everywhere together until the day they died exactly two weeks apart.

Glenda painted many portraits and landscapes. She painted portraits of children, and then their children, throughout the Franklin Parish area for decades. In 1978 she opened the Gallery House, a frame shop and art gallery in Winnsboro. After she and Dean were married, they eventually moved the Gallery House to Alexandria, and it remained there until they retired. Glenda and Dean’s faith in God was strong and both were very involved in their church homes throughout the years.

Dean Wood Smith was born on September 29, 1948, in Saranac Lake, New York, and passed from this world on April 22, 2024. He passed at home in Holum, Louisiana in the community of Pistol Thicket two weeks before his wife, Glenda Kinnison Smith. His parents were Victoria Jean Smith and Frederick McDonald Smith. When Dean was a child his family moved to Crossett, Arkansas, where he grew up.

Dean married Sandra Goodwin Smith and lived in West Monroe. They had two children: Matthew Smith and Christopher Smith. He later married Glenda Kinnison Smith and they were married for 35 years, up until the time of his death.

Dean is survived by his sons; brother, Grant Smith; his step-daughter, Robin Marsh (Brad), and his grandchildren: Samantha, Tristan, A.J., Maggie and Elle Smith, as well as all of Glenda’s grandchildren and family members that also loved him.

Dean was an adventurer throughout his life. At an early age, his father was a forester for the Von Trapp family (of Sound of Music Fame) in upstate New York. Because of this, at the age of 3 Dean was able to meet Albert Einstein, who tried to feed Dean a worm. At the age of 16 he fought wildfires in Alaska and had a pilot’s license and flew a plane belonging to his father. Dean trained as a chef and was a fabulous cook. He even worked for a year as a chef at a resort on Little Cayman Island. Later in life Dean took up painting as a hobby and memorialized his meeting with Einstein in a picture.

A Memorial Service for Glenda and Dean will be held on Saturday, June 15th, at 10:00 am at Grayson Methodist Church, 5213 LA 126, Grayson, LA. No flowers are requested. Any memorials can be made to the animal rescue of your choice.
