This is one of those recipes that was introduced to me by my husband’s family. I had never heard of such a strange concept as gravy for breakfast. In my family, we only had gravy on Thanksgiving, haha. When my mother-in-law first made this breakfast meal for me, I was pleasantly satisfied with its deliciousness. The gravy is filled with savory sausage seasoned with black pepper and served with freshly baked biscuits. This Biscuits & Gravy Recipe is the perfect breakfast to start out the new year!
While the biscuits bake in the oven, you can start cooking the gravy on the stovetop. The biscuits and gravy should take about the same amount of time to cook so that you can serve immediately together. I used two packages of Jimmy Deans Original Sausage with a whole quart of heavy whipping cream. This yielded a nice full pot of gravy which left plenty of leftovers.
The sausage is what gives this recipe most of the flavor, but many people prefer a more “peppery” taste, so feel free to add extra pepper to your liking. Or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even use spicy sausage as a substitute. Since I’m a spicy-lover at heart, that’s next on my list. A rich, creamy and peppery sausage gravy served over a freshly oven baked biscuit. Perfect with a side of fried eggs!
Ingredients
32 oz ground breakfast sausage
1 quart heavy whipping cream, divided
1 Tbs butter
1/8 tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
3 Tbs flour
12 frozen buttermilk biscuits
Directions
- FOR BISCUITS
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Place biscuits on an UNGREASED pan. Make sure biscuits are touching on all sides
- Bake for 25 minutes
- FOR SAUSAGE GRAVY
- In a large pot, cook the sausage slightly over medium heat until brown all over. Make sure to mix often and break up the sausage into smaller pieces along the way
- Once the sausage is cooked, strain any excess grease then return to the pot
- Add about ¾ quart of the heavy whipping cream, butter, salt and pepper into the pot. Stir and bring to a boil
- In a separate bowl, add the remaining ¼ quart of heavy whipping cream with the flour. Mix well until thick in consistency
- Pour the flour mixture into the boiling pot and mix thoroughly
- If you prefer a more “peppery” flavor, add more black pepper to the pot at this point. Make sure to taste in between to ensure it’s to your liking.
- Let boil for an additional minute then reduce the heat to a low simmer until ready to serve
- Serve over the baked biscuits and enjoy! (Note: We usually eat them with a fried egg on top!)
