————————————————————-

3. How did 311 meet?

Krissy3699@aol.com

We met in our hometown of Nebraska. Nick, Tim & Chad went to Westside High School together and SA & P-Nut went to Bryan High School together. Chad met SA during their first year of college at the University of Nebraska – they both lived on the same floor of a school dorm. One day Chad told SA he was looking for a bassist. SA recommended P-Nut…and 311 began to take shape.

4. When did you decide on music as a career?

phille311@aol.com, tluck1@gl.umbc.edu (T.J.), zero311@mailcity.com (Kelly)

(Tim): In 4th grade when I first picked up trombone.

(P-Nut): I think that the biggest music fans become the next generation of musicians, so I think that a musical career was inevitable.

(Nick): My parents tell me I was adamantly set on it by age four.

(SA): “Say guys, how ’bout we move to California?”

(Chad): I’ve always loved music and had always hoped for it to be my career. I decided after my first year in college to move to California and put all of my energy into making a career in music.

5. What bands were the members of 311 in before they formed 311?

Pjam311a5

In junior high, Nick played in a band called The Right Profile. They got their band name from a song by The Clash.

In tenth grade, Nick played in a band called The Extras.

Nick and Chad played together in the Westside High School Jazz Band.

Nick and Tim played in The Eds, an Omaha band also featuring Ward Bones, Andy Gray and Ed Birmingham from 1986-87. The band got their name because their drummer’s name was Ed.

Tim and Chad played in The Bushmen.

In 1988-89, Nick (bass, vocals), Chad (drums), Tim (guitar), and Ward Bones (keyboards) played in a band called UNITY. Unity broke up in 1990 when Nick moved to Germany.

P-Nut, Chad, and Jim Watson (the original 311 guitarist) played in the Fish Hippos. When Nick returned to Omaha and joined, the name was changed to 311. Tim and SA joined soon thereafter and 311, as you know it, was born.

————————————————————-

6. How did the name “311” come about for the band?

mshollan@indiana.edu, Cory328, Limpy311, rwalsh@umich.edu (Ryan P. Walsh)

311 is an Omaha police code for indecent exposure. One rainy day, P-Nut and some friends went skinny dipping in a public pool. They were apprehended by police. One of P-Nut’s friends (Jim Watson) was arrested, cuffed (naked) and taken home to his parents. He was issued a citation for a code 311 (indecent exposure). We thought this was funny, so we took it as our band name. After the humor of the name wore off – we still kept it because we liked that it was just abstract and that it did not define us in anyway. The name did not describe our sound or our politics, it just let the music speak for itself. Since most interviewers always ask us “What does 311 mean?”, we have come up with lots of different answers over the years. Some include…. Nick – “five friends making music”, Tim – “a number dictated to me by a higher intelligence”, P-Nut – “knowing a little numerology and studying a little magic, which I do; in some factions, three is man and 11 is magic. So 311 is like male magic.”

7. Even though you have made it clear that 311 does NOT stand for KKK, can you explain the 311/KKK rumor?

mcn311@hotmail.com

In 1997 there was a rumor going around that the name 311 stood for KKK because K is the 11th letter of the alphabet (3K). As a result, some high schools, including Westside High School, banned students from wearing 311 t-shirts. We issued the following statement:

“It has come to our attention that there is a very unsettling rumor circulating regarding the name of our band ‘311.’ We have been told that certain white supremacist groups use the numbers 311 to represent KKK. This is a most unfortunate coincidence and one that is extremely disturbing to us. We would like to state for the record that this is completely at odds with our personal beliefs. We believe the only people worth hating are organized haters like the KKK. Anyone familiar with our lyrics knows how we feel. Our lyrics make a strong stand against racism and a strong stand for positivity and unity. The name of our band originally comes from an Omaha police citation for indecent exposure. We thought it was funny at the time. Now our name simply means – five friends from Omaha making music. Music that stands for peace and unity.”

A quote from the song “Silver” that speaks out against racism –

“Of the racist institutions, simple minds belong, not happy being human, no wish to get along – little people need exclusions, sucker groups to throng – it makes them feel special, it makes them feel strong. Now I got a click but it’s more like a family, not an ethnic trip, more like an ethic see – I write the rhyme today, tell it to you later – whether were comin’ in wack or what – it’s a waste to be a hater.”

8. When was 311’s first show?

fire_dncr@yahoo.com (Michele Prindle), LJHWMP, jojo311jaja@hotmail.com, CALIFEM18 (Melissa), Incubus952, jbb2e@frank.mtsu.edu (Rocky)

Depending on the release of the next album, we should start sometime between September and October 1999.

—————————————————————–

14. I heard a rumor that your upcoming tour was aiming towards more smaller club type venues as opposed to more arena shows. Is this true?

jaknjill311@hotmail.com, joebil_8@hotmail.com (Joseph Bilancieri)

Yeah, we are going to start out in clubs and theatres and then gradually move up to some bigger venues. First we want to get back to the places that we played in the early days. We want to feel the energy of the crowd going off.

—————————————————————–

15. What kind of process do you guys go through when you write your songs, to really bring out your creative abilities?

ottocr@nsu001.northern.edu (Clayton), tdevane@mail.clemson.edu

Individually we do a lot of writing in our home studios where we can kind of close ourselves off from the world. When there are no outside distractions it is easier to stay focused and to channel creative energies.

————————————————————-

16. What’s the inspiration behind such clever and meaningful lyrics?

Matt mwmcgra@ilstu.edu, Cheebabudz@aol.com (Joe), confam5@mediaone.nets (greg and kevin), Jive311 (ryan oppel), 311junkee@angelfire.com (graham), MuDPie66@aol.com, KungFuJenn@aol.com, Soccermon1 (dave corey), TINY311GRL (Brittany Henriksen), Kerry6@aol.com, Phreaky311, OOTan311@aol.com. (Chris), anniepickle15@hotmail.com (Annie Kojar), YomikeYo2

We are inspired by our own lives and also by what is happening in the world around us. We might get inspiration from listening to music or from seeing a piece of art or from a personal relationship or from something we see on the news, read in the paper or download from the internet.

————————————————————-

17. As 311 has progressed for the better, as a band and as people, so have many of your fans. How does that make you feel having positively influenced and reached so many people such as myself?

hoambru@aol.com (Jason Pociask), johnomatic@hotmail.com (John Knelange)

(Tim): It always feels good to hear we influence people positivley. We’re tryin’. Hopefully ya’ll will continue to rock with us.

————————————————————-

18. If you guys weren’t entertaining the world with your music, what do you think you’d be doing with your life right now?

DestinyAZE (Destiny), u939@truman.edu, Musta82550, jhearn@vt.edu (Jason Hearn)

(Tim): The possibilities seem infinite.

(P-Nut): I think I would be teaching music, making movies (which I seriously am going to do when I am older), live in Australia in the bush, going 4x4ing every day, being the freak that I see myself as, making people laugh in some capacity or another.

(Nick): I’d be working with computers. I find technology exciting.

(Chad): I might be teaching drums if the rock band didn’t work out.

————————————————————-

19. What barnyard animal would each of the guys be and why?

Morningsad@aol.com (Meg)

(Tim): Bird of prey.

(P-Nut): I would be the barking dog that attacks every third person in a yellow hat.

(Nick): I know it’s not in most barnyards, but I’m fond of rams. Please don’t consult Freud on this one.

(SA): Barnyard badass. ‘Cuz.

(Chad): A dirty swine.

————————————————————-

20. What’s the best thing about touring? What’s the worst thing?

tbuodon1@aol.com (ashley), SLNKYGRL18@aol.com (Angela), aftershock420@hotmail, iiraverxii@aol.com

(Tim): Best – playing music with my friends. Worst – being away from home.

(P-Nut): The best thing about being on the road is seeing all the people that we have touched with our music; showing everybody how we feel about our music. The whole experience of being on the road is great, I love to travel, I think everyone should do as much as possible. It’s good for perspective. The worst thing is being away from my girlfriend and I am sure I will miss my doggy when I leave.

(Nick): The best thing is the rush of seeing a mass of humans rocking to music you made. The worst is singing with strep throat.

(SA): The people, the people, the people. The people, the people, the people. Just kidding on that last answer.

(Chad): The best things are seeing different places and playing the shows….. the worst things are living out of a suitcase and being away from home and loved ones.

————————————————————-

21. Could you please tell me the colors of the your eyes? Ya, I know its silly but its driving me nuts.

samiam_42@hotmail.com (Brittney Summers)

(miT): Blue.

(P-Nut): Peircing blue.

(Nick): Blue.

(SA): Brown.

(Chad): Bluish

————————————————————-

22. Reflect on your most memorable moment on stage, not necessarily the where, but why it’s so memorable.

starr311@hotmail.com (andrea), SA123O (tiffany)

(Tim): Memory?

(P-Nut): It’s a tie for the Fox in Atlanta, Red Rocks in Denver, and Bonner Springs in Missouri, all because of the greatness of the shows, the expressions on the faces and the feeling of accomplishment after the shows.

(Nick): I remember the Red Rocks Colorado show as a stand out. The moment is captured in our home video. It’s when I told the story of stopping there on our way to LA, when the place was empty, standing on the stage saying one day we’re going to rock this place. Recalling that moment to the full audience was very emotional for me.

(Chad): Playing at Red Rocks in Colorado. It was a full circle thing. When we were moving to California, we stopped in Colorado, went to Red Rocks, stood on the stage and said to ourselves, “we will play here someday”.

————————————————————-

23. What do you miss most about home when you are on tour?

mccarter@ic.net

(Tim): My woman.

(P-Nut): My girlfriend and dog – it will be the first time leaving her next time we tour, yep, I am getting sad just thinking about leaving my two favorite girls in the world.

(Nick): My dogs.

(SA): Jenny, Pablo and Irie.

(Chad): The weather, cooking and loved ones.

————————————————————-

24. What is your favorite 311 record? Any comments?

cince@gte.net (C. Ince – Denton, Texas), absolut513@AOL.com, souperstar@gurlmail.com(Linz), DiaBoLiK84@aol.com (Sarah), rage17@hotmail.com

(Tim): The one Scotch worked on.

(P-Nut): My favorite 311 album is Grassroots becuase we were at a time in our careers that we could do anything and I think that the music reflected our openess, but this new one is going to be heavy and lovely, so we will see.

(Nick): I think the blue album captures an era of great optimism in the band. So does Music.

(SA): I can’t pick a favorite.

(Chad): It’s very difficult to pick a favorite record. Recording the first record, Music, was very special. We had a good relationship with Eddy Offord then and it was a magical, memorable time for me.

————————————————————-

25. What is your favorite 311 song?

en325598@oak.cats.ohiou.edu (Evan Francis Novak), rwalsh@umich.edu, bottle_nose_dolphin@yahoo.com (brianna loyd), cbcb123@hotmail.com (Carolyn Brown ), Homebrew66@aol.com, trust-no-one-311@usa.net, dogbyt18@epix.net (Kevin Mennig), Jon311STB@aol.com

(P-Nut): My favorite song would probably be Brodels, Homebrew, Nutsymton and all the others because I love 311 as much as any fan out there, it’s my fricken’ life.

(Nick): That’s like choosing a favorite son or daughter. Too hard.

(SA): Prisoner.

(Chad): It’s difficult for me to have a favorite song. If I had to choose a handful, they would be: Paradise, Freak Out, 8:16am, Six, Lose, Random, Purpose, Inner Light Spectrum, Stealing Happy Hours, Tribute.

(Tim): LaCasa Pizza

————————————————————-

26. Would you ever use a gun for anything?

brantsullivan@hotmail.com

(Tim): Are you refering to my biceps?

(P-Nut): Never discharged a fire arm, guns are for puss*es.

(SA): The thought of having to use a gun frightens me.

(Chad): Sure.

————————————————————-

27. What’s your favorite place or city to have a concert in?

MrE816, shaftel.1@osu.edu, PhishHippo, Count_SA@mailcity.com, SEC924@aol.com

There are so many great places to play, from Red Rocks in Denver, CO to the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA.

(P-Nut): Amsterdam is a great city to have a show in, but the people aren’t into us in Europe. San Francisco is the best city in the world.

(Tim): My pants.

(Nick): Kansas City, Atlanta, Denver, Virginia.

(SA): The Fox Theater in Boulder CO.

(Chad): I like to play L.A., NY, Chicago, Atlanta and New Orleans.

————————————————————-

28. What does it feel like to walk on stage and feel the energy from the crowd, bouncing and singing along, knowing that they have come to see you, 311?

punisher311@rocketmail.com (Wendy Red Star), Funk3elevn (Sambo), HRC311DMB@aol.com, vansonft25@yahoo.com

It’s an amazing feeling and a huge rush. The energy at our shows is very positive and really charged so it inspires us to play hard.

(Tim): Playing music and having people listening and enjoying it is a great feeling. I try to let the music flow and not f*ck up.

(P-Nut): Nothing like that feeling. That is the reason why I play music for a living. So intense.

(Nick): That’s the best. It’s a natural high with no hangover.

(SA): Groovy.

(Chad): I’m usually thinking about my drum part. But it feels great, and I love to watch the crowd while watching our concerts on video.

————————————————————-

30. Who’s got the herb?

Donut00000@aol.com, Vann109, lilly@wcnet.net (Craig)

(P-Nut): Duh.

(Nick): P-Nut.

(SA): Troy

(Tim): Elixer

————————————————————-

31. My 311 question is regarding out of body experiences. I hear references to it in the lyrics and the music. I was wondering whether or not 311 are frequent out of body travelers. I myself have been a trainee for about four years now, with only a few successful projections. I am sure that you guys project, I would love to know what techniques you use to exit your bodies, and perhaps what songs or lyrical fragments have origins in the astral realms?

livingphantasm@hotmail.com (Preston Parish)

(Tim): I suspect melodies and lyrics could have origins in astral realms.

(P-Nut): I don’t think that any of us (though I am not 100% sure) are practicing for out-of-body-experiences, but I do know that SA had a very intense one back when he was growing up in Omaha. I would have to say that if I was going for that kind of experience, I would meditate and focus, knowing that I have had great feelings of freedom and lightness when doing yoga and concentrating on the breath.

(SA): I spoke of it in The Continuous Life, I was referring to an experience I had in college. Unfortunately I can’t say that I have experienced any since.

————————————————————-

32. Do you expect the upcoming album to be your best yet?

StOnY Bby@aol.com

(Tim): Yes, please.

(P-Nut): Yes we do expect this new one to be the best yet. We expect the best out of ourselves at all times in the studio.

(Nick): Yes, but we feel that way on every album so there’s no point in saying it. If we found something wrong with it, then we’d do it different. It’s not until later that our mistakes are apparent. Mistakes include too many songs in not enough time on Transistor. Wrong producer on Grassroots. All I know is that we’ve never taken so much time on an album as we have on this one. I’ll never let myself feel rushed again.

(SA): But of course.

(Chad): We’re hoping. At least we’re trying.

————————————————————-

33. What advice would 311 give to people just starting in the music business? Like things that they wished they would have known while they were still in Omaha.

jwaxter@yahoo.com (Joey Waxter), junior83@webtv.net (junior)

(Tim): If you live in Omaha eat as much LaCasa pizza as you can, because if you move or tour, you aint gettin’ any more for long periods of time and that’s hard.

(P-Nut): Be original, don’t bend your art for anyone or anything. Determination is also a good trait. Be yourself, that’s probably the best advice in this answer. Good luck. Do your will.

(Nick): Originally, I thought I needed to hook up with LA musicians. When I realized the best collaborators I could have where my friends from school, life got a lot better.

(SA): Everything has been a learning experience beit positive or negative, although never sign anything if you do not feel right about it.

————————————————————-

34. I look up to many people in different professions, hobbies, special talents, etc. I see you guys as my role models in the music industry. Who have you looked up to when it comes to music and who has put the greatest influence on you?

Sb311sw@aol.com (Steve)

(P-Nut): Personally I look up to the guys in the band because they have helped me deal with the reality of being in 311 and influenced me to write what I feel in my brain.

(Nick): Joe Strummer and Sting are a couple of role models for me. My principal influences would have to be my bandmates. We have a chemistry that is very fortunate.

(SA): I’d have to say that I look up to people who do things independently and who look for alternative ways of distributing their music.

(Chad): I have so many. Here are a few….Jaco Pastorious, John Scofield, John McLaughlin, Carmen McCrea, Dennis Chambers.

————————————————————-

34. If you guys could meet any muscial influence, dead or alive-that you haven’t met before, who would it be?”

(Tim): Jerry Garcia.

(P-Nut): Curtis Mayfield, Tom Waits, Steve Harris, Tad Doyle, Stanley Clarke, John Paul Jones, Charles Mingus, Beastie Boys, I would really love to meet Flea, Houdini.

(P-Nut): Probably would meet a fan on Fanatic.

(SA): Never been asked.

————————————————————-

37. What are all of your roots ethnically and do you feel that you integrate those roots into your music? If so, how?

wicca311@gurlmail.com

(Tim): It seems the experience in my reality tunnel is what I integrate into our music.

(P-Nut): I am of Scottish / English decent and fiercely proud of it. I don’t know if you can feel the Ethnicity of me when you listen to my songs, but you definitely know that it’s me.

(Nick): I’m mostly Norwegian with some Cherokee Indian. I believe that my environment growing up in Nebraska was a bigger inffluence than my heritage.

(SA): Mexican-Irish. All music to me is a form of African music in some form or another.

————————————————————-

38. Why do you do what you do?

sk82311@aol.com (Laura Hartstone)

(Tim): Livin’ and rockin’

(P-Nut): There has only been one path to take, there are no mistakes.

(Nick): It satisfies everything I need in life. Fun, creative expression, and a job.

(SA): I can’t think of anything more rewarding or as fun.

(Chad): I love writing and performing music.

————————————————————-

39. What was the last book each of you have read?

ToneDef311@aol.com (Susan)

(Tim): The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot.

(P-Nut): I read a book (finished it yesterday) called the Book of Skulls by Robert Silverberg, about a group of four guys from upstate New York that find this Ancient manuscript. In the Desert is a monastery where age doesn’t effect the people who live there. It’s a really cool book, I read it for the first time when I was a punk kid. I was looking for it for years, and got it for Christmas, a signed first print, I was stoking in my own juices.

(Nick): Rule of the Bone by Russel Banks.

(SA): The Evolutionary Mind.

(Chad): Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot. (almost finished)

————————————————————-

40. If you guys were to be in any other band (past and present) which band would it be and why?

Skiebees@aol.com, NHUS1@aol.com

(Tim): Alex Handroll Band.

(P-Nut): I would have liked to play bass with Curtis Mayfield back in the 70’s and then I would’ve switched to play with Iron Maiden for awhile.

(Nick): I would have loved to play in the Clash. That had a similar high energy and creative spirit that we have.

(SA): The Smiths.

(Chad): Kiss 1975-78 only and Mahavishnu Orchestra. Kiss-because of a childhood love for the band. Mahavishnu-because the music is technically challenging and unique.

————————————————————-

41. I’d like to know 311’s predictions on what will happen midnight December 31, 1999?

AHUNDTOFT@CCTR.UMKC.EDU (Tony Hundtoft), jhearn@vt.edu (Jason Hearn)

(P-Nut): I think that the calendar will change as usual and I do expect some computer foul-ups, but nothing in the way of an apocalypse.

(Nick): Hard to say, I don’t foresee any catastrophes.

(SA): Two may enter, one may leave.

(Chad): An awakening that nobody will notice.

(Tim): I’m not allowed to talk about it.

————————————————————-

42. What is your favorite song to play live? Which song do you think pumps up the crowd the most?

MULCH4311 (Ashley), ZMAN420@webtv.net (Zack Hall)

(P-Nut): I think that Freak Out is my favorite, even though we play it every night, I think it’s the catalyst for the crowd’s excitement.

(Nick): Freak Out comes to mind for moshing. All Mixed Up is good for dancing. Stealing Happy Hours is good for listening.

(SA): Freak Out pumps them up as does Feels So Good.

(Chad): It’s hard to pick a favorite song. But I think that Applied Science, and Fu** the Bull**** get people rockin’.

(Tim): I enjoy playing all the songs, especially the ones where we’re f*ckin’ rockin’ the f*ck out.

43. What’s the story about the RV catching fire during the Music Tour, as mentioned in the songs T&P Combo and Omaha Stylee?

cbarlow98@hotmail.com

The “Music” tour almost ended tragically during a trip between Springfield, MO and Kansas City on I-44. Nick was driving the RV when he noticed it was running hot. When he began to pull over, he saw smoke and flames coming up from under the vehicle. He quickly pulled onto the shoulder of the highway and the band members jumped out through the flames. Nick, the last one out, received second degree burns from jumping through the wall of flames. The RV exploded. The van we were towing caught fire and also burned to the ground along the interstate. Traffic was backed up for 2 miles. All of our clothes, equipment and personal possessions were destroyed. We had some minor burns and scrapes, but no major injuries. Nick’s hair was singed, so he shaved his head. Although we were definitely shaken – we decided not to let the tragedy end the tour. We decided to keep going. We headlined a show the next day (SHARKFEST at Sharky’s Brewery in Omaha) with borrowed equipment. You can hear about the RV incident in the song Omaha Stylee:

“My bros and I were driving the RV bleeding flames us leaping through fire surviving – zoned with no home there was fire all on it – umm, let me have my life, I want it!”

————————————————————-

44. Did the band members ever play any other instruments?

Nick plays piano, bass and keyboards as well as guitar.

P-Nut played violin in second grade. Although left-handed, he played right-handed to look like the other violin players. So when he started playing bass, he played right-handed because that was the method he was accustomed to. P-Nut has been playing bass since he was 13 (he was a part of 311 when he was just 14).

Chad plays piano, guitar and has been playing drums since he was 7.

Tim played trombone, until eighth grade, when he switched to guitar.
SA has a gift with words, not just lyrics…check out his short stories on the official 311 website. Besides playing some percussion and working the turntables for 311, SA dj’s at clubs around Los Angeles.

45. Has the sound for the new upcoming album gone back to your older style like from Grassroots and Music, or has it stayed the same as Transistor?

Philygoat@aol.com, lynlieh@bellsouth.net (Lindsey), babystar311@gurlmail.com (Ran Ska Krissie), Sexton6474, barthojr@wilkes1.wilkes.edu, OZZman4320, NickChk311@aol.com (Jenn), yacam@sprint.ca (Chad), hoop311@yahoo.com (Chris Hooper), fortyoz1@aol.com, DNCO311 (Dean Redinbaugh), babigirl311@hotbot.com (Jennifer Heil), ali311@hotmail.com, bg19800@binghamton.edu, Squier311@aol.com

The new record will definitely have the trademark 311 vibe (with rock, funk, hip-hop and reggae influences). I wouldn’t say we’ve gone back to our old style. Right now a lot of the new songs have hard rockin’ guitars with melodic vocals. Overall it will probably have elements of all of our records, but it will also be a step into the future for 311.

46. You guys have been together for a long time now. What keeps your creative energy flowing so that you can continue to write bad ass music, album after album?

Puma976@aol.com (Chunky Monkey)

(Chad): I wish more people shared your same opinion. I think the fact that we love to do it is the fundamental reason why we continue. When you love to do something, you don’t even consider the energy required to do it. You just do it and are fulfilled doing it.

————————————————————-

47. P-Nut, I really appreciate your presence on stage at the shows, you seem to be very much the free spirit (Yea!). Would you say that’s true? How are you off the stage?

sugarcane81@hotmail.com (Jenny McKeown)

(P-Nut): I am a free spirit on stage, that’s when I can do anything I want and dance any damn way I feel, but as your question hinted, I am different off stage. I can still be loud and obnoxious but most of the time I am quiet and cerebral. I think that I am a true Gemini. I see my stage persona (p-nut) as a slice of the one me. Still the same person just a different side. The more I type the more I feel funny about what I type so I will stop here.

————————————————————-

48. Tim: I know that you’ve had influences from several areas : Carlos Santana, Jerry Garcia, Bad Brains, etc… but was there any one person who you heard playing and you said to yourself “that’s something I want to do”? If so, who was this person, and what was it about his playing that made you so interested?

c752249@showme.missouri.edu (Jeanne)

(Tim): A consistent trait amongst all of my fav’s seems to be the ability to translate or channel melodies that manifest in the soul, then travel thru the nervous system, muscles, fingertips, onto the strings, into the guitar, thru the pickups and electronics, into the amp, out the speakers, and into the air in the form of sound waves. The first persons to spark this fascination were Jerry Garcia and Carlos Santana. They seem so pure. Playing without any distortions of the physical body. A direct path from the soul. They made me want to be able to play in the moment; no past, no future. A place where the music just happens.

But If you’re asking if there was a person who made me want to switch from trombone to guitar while in jr. high, the answer would be Paul Moerke. I used to see him play at the local punk shows, he rocked out. Also, Eric Pierce playing in a band at the Westbrook talent show, doing covers of Ozzy, up there with an ELECTRIC GUITAR and AMP. I think it was some old school Peavey distortion. It sounded so cool. I had to switch to guitar.

49. This Question is for Nick Hexum and SA:

My all time favorite songs are “Do You Right” and “All Mixed Up.” What were your inspiration for writing these songs? And When did you write them?

Jigga184@aol.com (Nicole Connors )

(Nick): SA and I wrote Do You Right sitting on the floor of he and P-Nut’s bedroom in Van Nuys in ‘92. It isn’t a story it’s more poetry oriented. The title, “All Mixed Up” is from an early Elvis interview in which he says he’s All Mixed Up over his new found fame. I thought is was funny.

(SA): I remember sitting on the couch with Nick in our first bandhouse gazing outside. Van Nuys summer, postcard blue skies. I remember our writing session, passing the kind bud. Nick, reflecting a little, then, ” kicking back in the sand in the sun…” We first started working on All Mixed Up on the Grassroots tour. I remember getting off tour and putting some lyrics together. They were about being confused and being unfaithful. I took a section of what I wrote and used them in the song.

50. Is P-Nut going to play a stand up bass in any of the new songs?

unity311_311@hotmail.com

(P-Nut): I wanted to play stand up on the new one, but I haven’t found that right instrument for me, so maybe the next one. I want to be good enough to play the thing before I record, but there is lots of slap on the new one, which has been lots of fun writing and learning.

————————————————————-

51. For the new album, what kind of subject material is in the lyrics, as far as topics, issues and so forth?

DarthMau13@aol.com or Skamanjoey@aol.com (Joey)

(Nick): It’s definitely a bit darker. It just came out that way. The lyrics are not necessarily autobiographical.

————————————————————-

52. What do you guys think would be some good pointers in the process of song writing, to really bring out your creative abilities to put together a great song?

ottocr@nsu001.northern.edu (Clayton)

(Chad): Concentrate on good parts/riffs, good key changes, selected boomin’ grooves, wonderful melodies and/or screamin’ angst lyrics, song road maps, song continuity, introductions or exits, consider solos, and title. Then give it a couple weeks and see if you hate it. If not, you might have a good song, which means it’s time to test it on other people.

————————————————————-

53. I was wondering about the guy’s guitars. All I wanted to know really is if Tim, Nick, and P-Nut have their guitars tuned differently. I know some bands like Korn have their guitars tuned down. I wanted to play some 311 songs and wanted to know if I had to tune differently?

Joneal0308

(Tim): On every record thru Transistor we’ve used the standard guitar tuning E-A-D-G-B-E. P-Nut with the added bonus of a low B string (B-E-A-D-G.) For the new record we have 5 or 6 songs that we use tuned down guitars (P-Nut’s tuning remains the same.) The low tuning is B-E-A-D-F#-B.

————————————————————-

54.If you weren’t 311 and didn’t have the 311 style, what type of music do you think you’d play and how do you think it would affect your personality and life style? Do you think that the type of music you play now has fitted you to a certain lifestyle and attitude?

HexumChicK

(P-Nut): There has been no other path for me or the other guys. 311 was meant to be. But if I was in any other band I am pretty sure it would reflect the diversity that 311 has proven over and over again…

————————————————————-

55. From Music through Transistor, you have written more and more songs about self-reflection, letting go of feelings and moving ahead with life (i.e. All Mixed Up, Don’t Stay Home, Beautiful Disaster and my favorite Use of Time). Why do you think that it is important for artists, such as yourselves, to spread these kinds of messages to your fans? And if it is important, where do your inspirations come from?

monypen20@aol.com (Annie C)

(Nick): Those songs generally deal with revelations I’ve had and want to share. I think that any good artist is going to reveal what’s on their mind through his or her music. I generally let the songs write themselves by expressing whatever is on my mind. If an artist tries to steer his lyrical content too much he can develop writers block. Many times when I write lyrics, the choice of subject is obvious because it has been on my mind.

————————————————————-

56. SA, will we be lucky enough to read some more examples of your literary genius? “Way To The Fair” was incredible! I’ve always wanted to thank you for it, as it doubled up my awe for you guys as individuals that make up a multi-talented mass of funk and intellect.

farain@shrike.depaul.edu (Fauzia)

(SA): After the record is done hopefully I’ll have some time to put something new on the page.

————————————————————-

57. SA: Will you ever publish any of your short stories or lyrics outside of a musical form?

stoneybaby311@rocketmail.com (Alyssa)

(SA): I can’t say one way or the other, but anything is possible.

————————————————————-

58. Is Chad going to break out another drum solo on this new record?

campopia@ride.ri.net (acjr)

(Chad): No new drum solo for the new record, but possibly on the next tour.

————————————————————-

59. In concerts, I have noticed something. On the amp behind P-nut there is always a little stuffed alien or a fake alien head. Is this some tradition or does it have a specific meaning?

llevrah_@yahoo.com

(P-Nut): The alien head is just a prop that I have always thought was fitting, probably won’t be there this year…

————————————————————-

60. 311 is a very influential band in my life. The lyrics, songs, and messages have a very sincere and positive effect on my mind and definitely affect the way the I act toward others. These songs also affect the way I live my life. I was just curious as to where you get the inspirations to write these songs that have such a strong and positive meaning. Thanks for really great music, and thanks for helping me to be a better person!

anthonycc@crusader.bac.edu (Tony)

(Nick): I love to hear that people have taken our lyrics to heart. Some people just listen to music to groove or rock to, but others take a closer look. I feel a responsibility to talk about a way out of problems, just as much as the problem itself. Many people say our message is positive, but that’s just natural. I couldn’t imagine not finding things to like about life. On the next album there is some darker content, but we’ll never wind up competing for the gloom market.

————————————————————-

61. Chad, I know you marched in a drum corps, but which one? And how did you enjoy marching?

wpspic2@pop.uky.edu, p_nut_91@hotmail.com (aaron wood)

(Chad): I marched with the Sky Ryders from Hutchinson, KS. Marching was a good experience for me. It wasn’t always easy and was a lot of work. But performing was great and it taught me about music as well as dedication. It is truly the only musical olympics and is a musical sport. It offers to provide experience in so many areas, but you must be dedicated.

————————————————————-

62. SA, who are some of your favorite artists, past and present?

ULSlinky311

(SA): There are so many whose names I don’t know. So many wicked works… I would say in the not-so-distant-past Jackson Pollack as my favorite and the present I would pick Ron English, Mear, Raoul Gonzalez, Randy “Randar” Galaska and Jeff Hall.

————————————————————-

63. Hey P-Nut: can you comment on what kind of stuff you’re doing on the new album (slap, standup, songwriting, etc.)?

specialj311@hotmail.com (Ian), owasted1@aol.com (Mike)

(P-Nut): I have written two songs with Nick and one with everybody, I am slapping in at least two songs and I know I have one more almost all-slap song in my brain. I haven’t found the right stand up for me yet, but I am still looking, probably won’t be any on the new album…

————————————————————-

64. What is the song Prisoner about?

doliver@erinet.com

(Nick): The song Prisoner is about a person that feels trapped in the material plane. It’s a sad song about someone trying to not be themselves.

————————————————————-

65. Does the song “8:16 A.M.” have anything to do with Hiroshima being bombed?

Idano22@aol.com

(Nick): No, the fact that it was the time the bomb was dropped is a coincidence I found out about recently.

————————————————————-

66. With these past couple of albums, I have noticed that you guys have been getting into a lot of sciences: especially astrology. I was wondering why you have been basing a lot of your songs on this subject?

cabana311@yahoo.com (Michael Thompson)

(SA): Well, I can’t say that astrology has been a topic or concept. Maybe what you’re referring to are ideas such as out-of-body experience, life existing elsewhere and advanced, ancient civilizations.

————————————————————-

67. What was the first song that all of you as “311” ever recorded for any kind of release?

martha-v@crosslink.net

(Chad): It was “Fu** the Bullsh**”, “Feels so Good” and “Peaceful Revolution”. We recorded those in the winter of 1990. They were demos and the drums were electronic. The next recording happened early in 1991 when we had real drums.

———————————————————

68. I’m confused about the song “What Was I Thinking” on Transistor. It is a really powerful song. What’s the background story behind Nick’s lyrics?

Mr Wookie6 (Brendan)

(Nick): There’s no specific story behind it. It’s just about the feeling one get’s after saying or doing something stupid.

————————————————————-

69. You guys seem to have a great appreciation for good literature and poetry. You’ve menetioned for one, Charles Bukowski and his semi autobiographical character Hank Chinaski in your songs. I was just wondering if you guys had any other favorite authors and/or books you really like?

wanda33@prodigy.net (Stephanie Golas), Cameraop, Jcole311

(SA): Russel Banks’ “Rule of the Bone” is pretty wicked. Terrance McKenna’s “Archaic Revival” is a definate must read. Timothy Leary’s “Design for Dying” you gotta have.

(P-Nut): Robert Anton Wilson.

————————————————————-

70. Who are a few of your favorite guitarists, past or present?

BrodelNick@aol.com

(Tim): Past- Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green.

Present- Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, John Scofield, Earnest Ranglin,Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, Pat Metheny, Trey Anastasio,Dimebag Darrel, Marc Ribot, Reverend Horton Heat, Dr. Know.

————————————————————-

71. Who are a few of your favorite bassists, past or present?

(P-Nut): A few of my favorite bassists are Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Flea, Mark King (Level 42), Les Claypool, Bootsy Collins, Stanley Clarke.

————————————————————-

72. Who are a few of your favorite drummers, past or present?

(Chad): A few of my favorite drummers are Dennis Chambers, Narada Michael Walden, John Bisonie, Fish and Josh Freese.

————————————————————-

73. Tim, I first want to give you mad props for your influence on me and my guitar choice. I have a PRS 24 custom and just love it. I am just wondering, what setting do you use on your rotary dial on your PRS? I assume 10, but on some songs it sounds different.

milesclan@sprintmail.com (Jarrod Miles)

(Tim): Thanks. I have toggle pick-up selectors. They’re easier for me to switch. The toggles are 3-way: up=neck humbucker, middlle=both humbuckers, down=bridge humbucker. For most clean and lead tones I use the neck pick-up, for most distortion and hard riff tones I use the bridge pick-up.

————————————————————-

74. I was just wondering if you had any suggestions as to how to slap right without getting all the blisters?

HomeGrowen (Spike)

(P-Nut): There is no slapping without blisters and pain, that’s what makes it so rewarding.

————————————————————-

75. When you are playing live, do you use a double pedal?

Haindesign@hotmail.com

(Chad): No, only a single Pearl pedal.

———————————————————

76. What exactly is Lucy in sky (as mentioned in Homebrew)?

obsessed311@hotmail.com

LSD

————————————————————-

77. SA…I know you are into art and are obviously a very creative person…have you ever created your own abstract/freeform sketches or pieces of art?

dmkenndy@students.uiuc.edu (dave m. kennedy)

(SA): No abstract or free-form since kindergarten. Well, maybe once or twice. I’m more into interior design.

————————————————————-

78. If you could streak in front of any one person’s house, who would it be?

waddaudef@hotmail.com (Jessica Taylor)

(P-Nut): Bill Clinton’s house would do fine for me.

(Tim): Alejandro’s (our studio assistant, shhh don’t tell).

————————————————————-

79. Chad, you are a very unique drummer. I like the sounds when you hit the snare and base drum simultaneously. Some people don’t understand how fat and unique that sound is. Not a lot of drummers do that…sh*t, your whole band is unique and innovative!!! For your drum solo on Grassroots…did you “borrow” some of that or were you influenced by Neil Pert?

Menskeezer

(Chad): Thank you for your compliments. I listened to Neil while growing up so I know I am influenced by his playing. But I have not purposely “borrowed” from any of his solos. Any resemblance is pure and natural influence.

————————————————————-

80.Which artist(s) influence the band’s writing most on laid-back, mellow tracks like “8:16 a.m., Lose, Nix Hex, Peaceful Revolution, Let The Cards Fall, Sweet, Rub a Dub, etc.?

eight16@yahoo.com (Justin Janke)

(Nick): Songs like 8:16, Stealing Happy Hours, and Lose were influenced by the jazz that Chad and I were exposed to in Concert Jazz Band back in high school.

————————————————————-

81. Tim: Why do you write your name backwards when you autograph something, just curious?

Zac

(miT): I’m not sure when it started, but I like writing backwards as a way of making my nervous system do something unnormal. The process is like how a lefty writes mechanically, but with the right hand. When I write miT, I write the “T” first then the “i” then the “m.”

————————————————————-

82. What are the last couple of lines in Salsa after “who thought she was a model but in truth a never has been”? I’m sure they are different than the lyrics written in the cd case. This is KILLING me.

balefire@yahoo.com (Annette)

(SA): “You both are fools. You and your cheap rooms too. The cigar biting your lips the way love use to.”

————————————————————-

83. When 311 was in their prime as a club band, were 311 fans in Omaha somewhat the same as they are today compared with the whole U.S? Did the Omaha fans know someday there would be 311 CD’s all over the U.S.?

Badluck33@aol.com (Jon)

(P-Nut): I don’t know if people really thought that deep about us, all they and we knew was that we were having fun and sweating all over the room together.

————————————————————-

84. Who is the man in the tan van (that is mentioned in at least two songs)?

ralph_taylor21@hotmail.com

(Nick): That’s from either Sesame Street or Electric Company…err… I mean either Shakespeare or Chaucer.

————————————————————-

85. I wish SA would spin more. I was wondering if SA would be using the turntables more on the new album, or will it just be used as a tour item?

kbok@student.umass.edu

(SA): Yes. I’ve been a vinyl collector most of my life and I first started experimenting with the turntable as an instrument on the Grassroots release. I don’t practice as much as I should though.

————————————————————-

86. Chad, What advice do you have to someone who is a serious beginner student, in helping them achieve a solid foundation and background on the drums…for professional play…in all forms of music?

nix311@hotmail.com (Justin Jones)

(Chad): Make sure you have a good beginner teacher. I think the first things you learn are so important. I had many teachers and think that variety will only expand your knowledge. And put your time in by practicing. Another suggestion would be to learn a different instrument. Preferably one that is more “chord structure” based such as piano or guitar.

————————————————————-

87. How do you pronounce Taiyed? And what does it mean?

mojo311@theglobe.com, Cromer316 (Tom Cromer)

(Tim): tayd, with a line above the a, rhymes with jade, wade, raid, maid, laid, etc. The word could be defined as an adjective describing a feeling of highness, bliss, happiness, etc. Taiyed is an altered state of conciousness, usually accompanied with a positive mental attitude (PMA-see Bad Brains.) The term was coined by a friend of ours during high school, probably Dave Barker, or possibly Nick, I’m not certain. Taiyed can be attained thru yogas and meditations, or, as Robert Anton Wilson (I think) says, “thru the backdoor” with the help of such things as thc, psilocybin, nitrous oxide, alcohol, etc.

————————————————————-

88. What ever happened to the Omaha song, “Strive not Sing”?

yeah311_@hotmail.com (Jim Smith), checkout311@hotmail.com (hillary bennent)

It’s called “Strive not Sink”. It was an old song and I guess it sunk.

————————————————————-

89. P~Nut….what is it like working and traveling with the same guys every day? I am in a band and sometimes the guys and I don’t get along all that great and I was wondering if it was because I am the only female in the band or because I’m the youngest or just because we are annoyed with eachother.

Bladett69@aol.com (Deanna)

(P-Nut): Constant togetherness can be straining, but we lived together literally for two years, so being on a bus for eight hours of the day(sometimes more) is really not too bad especially when it’s us, we have fun almost all the time.

————————————————————-

90. On Grassroots, Nick says, ” like a drive through Estes Park “. I love Estes Park and was just wondering if the band spent any time in the area, and if so, did you go to the Estes Park Brewery?

edkennel@unity.ncsu.edu

(Nick): I don’t recall going there as a band. It’s a place my father and I visited a lot as a kid.

————————————————————-

91. What were the members of 311 like in high school?

@columbus.rr.com

(Tim): I didn’t meet SA and P-Nut until after high school. Nick was very advanced and graduated early. Chad and I only stayed so we could play in the Bushmen with Corey Baltzell, Lon Breslow, and Chris Demartino (our last gig was on a riverboat.)

————————————————————-

92. I’ve noticed that some of 311’s songs sound similar to many classic 70’s rock groups. You guys have any 70’s rock groups influences on your music?

Sinistrkid@aol.com

Led Zeppelin, Clash, Beatles, Grateful Dead, AC/DC, 70’s Funk (Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Sly & Family Stone, etc.)

————————————————————-

93. What is SA’s favorite song to sing?

MAHill21

(SA): There are so many. Hmmm, I would have to say “Who’s Got the Herb”

————————————————————-

94. I read on the 311 web page that you use your computer a lot to get the framework for your songs. I currently have Cakewalk Pro Audio 8. What kind of software do you use or recommend?

blucero@lucent.com (Brandon)

(Nick): Cakewalk is fine. I use Opcode’s Studio Vision Pro 4.2. There are a lot of good midi and audio programs. I have Pro Tools, but I don’t use it because it is not made for midi applications. For most of the parts, when writing, I make I just use midi to write a baseline, drum, or keyboard part. I use hard drive audio recording for vocals or guitar. It’s so convenient once you get in the mode. After that, the band will replay the parts in there own styles, giving it the 311 vibe and sound.

————————————————————-

95. In what ways, if any, is the band supporting the fight for the legalization of the greatest herb on earth – Marijuana? (besides Hempilation)

mailto:oneillbp@earthlink.net (Brian P. O’Neill)

(P-Nut): I bailed a person out of jail that I didn’t even know because he was in for growing weed. I would be a member of Norml if I thought they were doing a great job, but the truth is I don’t. I know that there is a better way to legalize than they have thought of. Maybe I will write a book.

————————————————————-

96. If you guys could work with any rap artist alive or dead, who would it be?

wild_thing311@yahoo.com

(SA): Son of Bazerk.

————————————————————-

97. How does your inspiration differ between songs written on the road and songs written at home?

sperpis@foothill.net (Jennifer Nobles)

(Chad): Our inspiration does not differ all that much actually. I think the biggest difference is the comfort level. If we are more comfortable, it increases productivity and concentration which are key in writing music.

————————————————————-

98. Do you guys ever anonymously go into your chatroom (The Palace Chat) and talk with fans?

ilovethe70s@yahoo.com (Martha Stevens)

(P-Nut): I go to the Palace in person and have nothing but fun when I do.

————————————————————-

99. I was on tour with Phish a while ago and I saw someone that I never thought I would see. I saw you Tim! I was so freaked out that I saw you I didn’t even know what to say, so i didn’t even go up to you. Was really you at the show.

Mike

(Tim): That was me, my phriend…If you were at the Ventura or L.A. Greek shows. I’ve caught Phish in Santa Barbra and Germany as well.

100. SA Martinez,I have wondered this for a long time about the song “Creature Feature.” What were you going through as you were writing the lyrics? I know that the group believes in being positive, but I was curious as to what you were feeling deep down when you wrote it. Was it during a period of rough times? We are all human afterall.

DiscoJP@aol.com (Justin)

(SA): “It was when I was contemplating breaking up with my girlfriend at the time.”

————————————————————-

101. Was the name FISH HIPPOS changed to “311” because someone in the band didn’t want to make it “big” with such a “strange” name?

RH Lo Ride

(Nick): I thought the name was more humor oriented than our band is.

————————————————————-

102. Chad, I’m probably one of your biggest fans. Do you ever like to meet fans like me. I wish I could meet you and speak with you about drums. I read a lot of your articles in magazines, but I really wish you could show me some stuff on my kit, cause I don’t really know how to get my toms to sound too good?

rejectroy@hotmail.com (your biggest fan, Roy)

(Chad): Hi Roy. Thanks for listening. I enjoy meeting our fans. We sometimes do meet-and-greets when we’re on tour. When we’re off tour and writing, the band requires much of everybody’s time which makes it difficult to meet fans. My suggestion for tuning drums is to make each spot on the drum head, near a tension rod, the same pitch. And find a drum teacher and/or a local drum shop for tips.

————————————————————-

103. Do you guys listen to Art Bell Radio Show? And if so have you ever considered being on the show?

TIM_82@yahoo.com

(SA): Art Bell is the man. I listen as much as possible. I’ve never thought of being a guest although I have called in and gotten through on occasion.

————————————————————-

104. What was your weirdest/embarrassing/or most horrible experience on stage?

MISSWORLDD@aol.com (Dana), lindaoramy@mobiletel.com (Amy Chiasson), dneal@mobiletel.com

(P-Nut): My wierdest experience on stage was when I was so enraged at the punk mf in front of me that I dropped my shorts and flexed my sfpincter in his frickin’ face, thanks for asking.

————————————————————-

105. I was wondering what SA is talking about in “The Continuous Life” when he says “city rednecks who think like the Omega Man.” Is he refering to the comic book character?

bmcgill@chs.mesa.k12.co.us

(SA): I’m referring to a bank hiast in the valley involving two gung-ho bank robbers

————————————————————-

106. Is there any chance Chad is gonna rap a verse on the new album?

hellya311_@hotmail.com

(Chad): No, sorry.

————————————————————-

107. Which one of you is the best baller? Who really tears sh*t up on the basketball court?

mcginlam@jmu.edu

(P-Nut): Well I have to say that I am the only one that plays with other people on a weekly basis, but I have been put in my place by Nick a bunch of times when we all lived together. I love the sport of basketball more than any other, and I thought you should know.

————————————————————-

108. SA! Are you still spining wax with Vestax?

magnumpi23@aol.com (John O’Connell)

(SA): I’m still using the 05pro and am looking forward to the 07.

————————————————————-

109. What were some difficulties when you first relocated to California? Were you worried about not being able to survive on playing music alone?

SpacePulse (Adam Robbins)

(Chad): Yes. That was one worry. One of the reasons we moved was so we could concentrate on the band. I knew that if we started getting jobs that it would cut into the band time.

————————————————————-

110. How can a fan get you to remember them….who stands out in your mind and what did they do to get in touch with you?

(April Hawkins)

(P-Nut): I keep in contact with fans through my mother (Joan) and she is the one who decides which e-mails I read or not, and then I don’t get swamped and at the end of the day it’s still fun to do.

————————————————————-

111. SA: What are your lines about the cosmic conscious in the song Galaxy referring to? “..since i have found the keys to free this energy”? In terms of RAW/Leary maps, do you mean the energy of what they call the 5th circuit? (ie. the one you’d experience by smoking That Crazy Mexican Dancin Weed?) Getting naturally stoned, such as listening to good music & focusing on Mood.

d94-mfj@nada.kth.se (Mats Fjellner/ Sweden)

(SA): You’re on the right track, charge ahead.

————————————————————-

112. How has success made an impact upon you guys, both musically and lyrically?

Squiggy007@webtv.net (Brian Kelly )

(Chad): There’s more pressure to do well now.

————————————————————-

113. Any comments on the song Hydroponic?

Unknown941@aol.com

(P-Nut): Hydroponic is one of our best songs, and one of my favorite to play even though it is one of the easier ones to do so.

114. I’m from El Paso, Texas. A bunch of us down here were wondering about the lyrics to “Lucky.” “… I’m takin’ it to the bridge and there’s a different country…” “… we got the juice it’s on tap…” I’m sure you guys must have gone to Juarez, Mexico when you played here in El Paso at Club 101. The bridge to Mexico is only about 5 blocks away from Club 101. If the lyrics are about Juarez, Mexico, tell us about your experience.

cano311@aol.com (Phillip Cano)

(SA): Well, to be honest, no. But I’m not sure a distinction can be made. That is when I am in El Paso, I feel as if I am in Mexico. “Pretty sweet,” as Cartman would say.

————————————————————-

115. Are any of you guys into Nusart Fateh-Ali Khan’s music or style?

klatig@utdallas.edu

(P-Nut): I have never heard of that artist, but that is no surprise because I have been in the studio for about a year concentrating on 311. I need to hear new stuff, The Roots’ new album is the goods for your soul.

————————————————————-

116. Chad. I’m a drummer and I was wondering, within your first few years of playing, what did you find yourself working the hardest on? Such as Sticking, Different beats, etc.

Bigchoader@aol.com

(Chad): I really can’t remember. That was about 16 years ago. The thing you should be doing in your first few years of playing is taking lessons. Because a good teacher will make sure that your lessons are focused and you can tackle your challenges one at a time, and in a logical order.

————————————————————-

117. What ever happend to the Count’s dog, Lionel?

(SA): Lionel lives with my exgirlfriend. I miss him.

———————————————————-

118. As you guys make new cds does it become much harder to write new material? And does it ever come to a point when the music is just a chore?

and311rew@aol.com

(Chad): The only time the music feels like a chore is during practice…..but only when it’s around the 5th practice in a row. I think writing music becomes a little more challenging because you’re always trying to come up with new things. And you become more self-aware.

————————————————————-

119. SA…I have read that you no longer smoke pot and I was wondering what made you stop?

Lettieb131 (collette)

(SA): Well that’s not entirely true. I stopped for a long while and, well, like I said, that’s not entirely true.

————————————————————-

120. Who is the girl in “Light Years” who says “Come here, now!” and at the end of “GAP” who says “Oh, that was good”?

JasJen@worldnet.att.net (Jason Jahnke)

————————————————————-

(SA): Wanda Coleman says “when you comin’ down…”

121. Were there any hard times in the really early years when the whole dream seemed hopeless?

Dingo10TH

(Chad): The most difficult time for me was in the begining.

————————————————————-

122. SA Martinez is my all-time idol!! Along with being my idol, I memorize everything about him, have a page dedicated to him, and want to be JUST like him!! This is the best chance I have on getting any contact with him. I would like to know the best advice he could give me on how to get started in a band. I can sing, play a little keyboards and I’m going to take guitar lessons. Any advice SA?

jd311sa@hotmail.com

(SA): First of all I’m flattered. Secondly, all I can say is find like-minded individuals. They’re probably people you know already. And practice.

————————————————————-

123. What kind of Ride cymbal did Chad use on the album 311(Blue)?

J3a1z1z@aol.com (Mike)

(Chad): I believe it was a 21″ AA Dry Ride from Sabian.

There are no plans for another Omaha Sessions and we don’t plan to release the early albums in their entirety. A number of the songs from our early records that didn’t end up on “Omaha Sessions” we’re already re-recorded for “Music”. ie: Do You Right, Feels So Good, etc…

————————————————————-

131. I was just wondering what you thought about some of your older fans saying that you lost your roots and that you should revert back to the sounds of Music and Grassroots?

poisoncrazylush7@hotmail.com

Roots intact…tree alive. We don’t think that we’ve lost our roots in any way. We have always tried to challenge ourselves musically and personally. We want to evolve and we want our music to evolve with us. That has been part of the 311 foundation since day one. We are proud of our early records and we still love playing those songs live (over 50% of our live show is usually from Music/Grassroots) – but we want to keep moving forward…so our new stuff may not sound exactly like the old stuff, but it still has the same roots and it’s still part of the same growing, living organism.

————————————————————-

132. How does everyone feel about the new record in the making? Mainly, do you guys think that it’ll blow up huge like the blue alblum did or do you think it’ll be more of an underground success?

GinsingSA (Paul)

We just make our music. It’s really impossible to predict whether the industry will support it and whether it will blow up. We’ll release the best record we can and we’ll tour and then whatever happens, happens.

Joey, smchaney@bellsouth.net (Sean Chaney), Yv0nne81@A0L.COM, PRODIGY106@aol.com

The next home video will probably be put together in the year 2000 (which seems like a long way away – but it really isn’t). These type videos take a long time to produce. Like the last one, it will be available in record stores, as well as on our website merch page.

179. Do you think you will be coming to Philly during your tour? If so, what would I possibly have to do to meet you guys?

HeX311FS

We will definitely be going to Philly on the next tour. To meet us – I guess you just have to be in the right place at the right time.

————————————————————-

180. On the next tour are you going to stop in Omaha? If so, how about a smaller show at the Ranch Bowl?

gina311chica@hotmail.com (Gina Dixon), BULLS69@aol.com (Mike), VanRAnd@bvu.edu (Andy Van Roekel), Jamesjames.drake3@gte.net (James Drake)

We will definitely be stopping in Omaha on the next tour. We love to go back home for a little while and see our families and old friends. The Ranch Bowl is a possibility or maybe Sokol Hall…Probably in October.

————————————————————-

181. A lot of bands are getting involved in human rights issues, such as the situation in Tibet. Do you think that 311 will be getting involved with any of these events, such as the Tibetan Freedom Concerts?

rar202@psu.edu (Rachael Renner)

We are definitely intersted in some of these concerts and causes. We get involved in a lot of charitable events. The Tibetan Freedom Concerts have been amazing shows and it really seems that they have created some awareness of the situation in Tibet. I’m sure they would be a blast to play – and freedom is the worthiest cause of all.

————————————————————-

182. Why haven’t you ever played the song “Grassroots” live ?

Six311311@aol.com, mganez1@Hofstra.edu (Mike Ganezer), courtneyca@hotmail.com, Three11BJS@aol.com (Brian Sherman)

We did play it once at a small club in Colorado just after “Grassroots” was released. I guess that was about four years ago. I can’t remember exactly where we were, but it was like a Bar-B-Q restaurant / bar in a ski town. We set our equipment up on the floor, because there wasn’t a stage and outside on the marquee it said “Tonight: 311 and $8.99 Rib Dinner”

————————————————————-

183. On the Transistor Tour, I noticed you pretty much played the same songs every night. On the next tour will you play more rare songs such as Slinky, Welcome, Use of Time, Rub-A-Dub, etc?

PERPEXUM@aol.com, KttnMthKrw Chad, cosmiccaleb007@yahoo.com, pearjam311@aol.com (Kelly)

We haven’t planned a set list for the next tour, but we will definitely be mixing it up. We always try to change the set-list around a little every night (even on Transistor tour). I guess sometimes when we find a list that we really like we will repeat it.

————————————————————-

184. Transistor is my favorite CD. I heard there were ten outtakes from the CD and you where going to put the Transistor outtakes on a CD that comes with the ETSD 2 video. If this is true, are your going to include all ten songs?

LIVEHIVE@aol.com, jskradski@radiks.net

I don’t think we had 10 outtakes from Transistor. I’m actually not sure how many we ended up with – but we will try to release them at some point. If/When we release another home video we will probably include another E.P. with 5 songs.

————————————————————-

185. Will you guys be coming to Australia after you release the new CD?

jeharris@enternet.com.au (Blake Harrison), brodelpj@start.com.au

We loved playing the Warped Tour in Australia last year and we definitely want to go back. The people there were so friendly and the energy and landscape were rad. A lot of people compare Australia to what California was like in the 50’s. We want to go back in January for the Big Day Out Festival. Hopefully you‘ll see us then.

————————————————————-

186. I recently read in a magazine how country artist Shania Twain hates to stay afterwards and sign autographs, and the only reason she does it is because she has to, I was wondering how you guys feel about the whole autograph and picture thing?

SpotKane79@aol.com

We love meeting fans and we don’t have a problem signing autographs, taking photos, etc.. But I think it helps a lot that our fans are so cool. I guess sometimes after a show we are too tired to meet with people and sign autographs and stuff – but generally it’s totally cool with us.

————————————————————-

187. I was wondering if 311 could come tour Rapid City, South Dakota? We never get shows!

thestud@mailcity.com (Philip)

We’ve never been to South Dakota – so I guess we do owe you guys a show. We’ll have to keep that in mind. It would be nice if we could hit all 50 U.S. states.

————————————————————-

189. Does 311 have any thoughts on who they will or want to tour with for their upcoming record?

ordinance9@aol.com, Ginchy311, SiLVerZ160@aol.com, plur311unity@hotmail.com, Fashionshc@aol.com, Makevilli@aol.com, 311-Sheri@msn.com, genocide_21@hotmail.com, slinkygirlhexum@yahoo.com (Nicole Rockwell), Siouxee79@aol.com (Susan), nickhexum@collegeclub.com, Martha311@hotmail.com, mattjohnson@iname.com

We haven’t discussed opening bands yet. I’m sure we will mix it up like we normally do.

————————————————————-

190. When will you tour again in the Washington, D.C. area?

dpotter@modispro.com (Denise Potter)

If everyting stays on schedule with the recording we will probably be in D.C in October.

————————————————————-

191. When you guys come to Detroit on your next tour, if I’m unable to get backstage passes will you hook me up so I can share some of the finest green on this side of the earth with you?

remme311@aol.com

Chris

Unfortunately we can’t really promise anybody backstage passes – but thanks for the KIND offer.

————————————————————-

192. Will Music and Grassroots ever be released on vinyl? I love spinning 311 and Transistor, but my 311 vinyl collection just isn’t complete without the first two albums.

drip3001@auburn.net (john alexander)

That’s a good question. I know I wish I had a vinyl copy of those records too. The market for vinyl is so small now, that the pressings are in small quantities. So if you don’t already have it, chances are you won’t see it in stores.

————————————————————-

193. Do you plan on coming back down to South Florida? Would you include Pensacola?

Twinstar12@aol.com, Transis210@aol.com (vanessa aka: ‘Nessa), stephen.whittington@mgccc.cc.ms.us

I’m sure we will hit Florida, including Pensacola, on the tour. Probably around October/November.

————————————————————-

194. Are you planning to have any guest artists on the new album or are you gonna keep it strictly 311?

Strshines, SkaPunx311@aol.com / Ska234@hotmail.co, Bandera311@aol.com (Andrew), Absolutpj@aol.com (PJ), boosted@mindspring.com

Right now it is strictly 311, but who knows what may end up on the final recording.

————————————————————-

195. Will 311 be doing some off-shoot shows to promote the new material before the tour?

RADIOMETZ@webtv.net (Mitch Metz)

No off-shoot shows are planned. We will probably just begin the tour when the record comes out and do a full lap of the whole country.

————————————————————-

196. Do you guys plan on playing any songs off of Omaha Sessions and/or any other songs from the pre-Capricorn albums on the next tour?

ThreeElvnR@aol.com (Rob), ihave311stikrs@hotmail.com, wusup311@hotmail.com, adidas_311@email.msn.com (Dan Calderon), mrblue75@hotmail.com (Mike Kleczka), egeshekter@prodigy.net

We haven’t decided on this yet. Once we begin rehearsals for the tour we’ll figure it out. We’ll probably mix in a few old songs. We have always tried to play a little bit from all eras of 311.

————————————————————-

197. When will you be playing in England again?

mark_josiah@yahoo.com

We really don’t know yet. Probably the year 2000. We know it always takes us a while to get up to the UK and Europe. Thanks for being patient!

————————————————————-

198. With the success of Korn’ s Family Values Tour, has the band ever considered a similar project to include bands that they have toured with in the past (Shootyz, Phunk Junkeez, Incubus, etc.) and bands that promote a similar “feel good vibe” (Dial 7, Zebrahead, Hed (pe), etc.). Something along the lines of a “Unity Festival 2000”.

rogersm@dstm.com, G_Man@garbagemail.com

We were considering a festival to usher in the millenium – but we decided that instead of starting off with really big shows that we wanted to start with small shows. Maybe in the Spring/Summer of 2000 we will put together a big package tour of good vibes and other bands.

————————————————————-

199. Do you plan on touring with the Urge again…maybe on this year’s tour?

mophead311_7@yahoo.com (Sue Sailor), urgegirl@inetnebr.com, maguire@wwtg.net

I’m sure we will do some more dates with the Urge. We love playing with those guys. I don’t know when.

200. I have to say that my family and I are your biggest fans, along with the rest of our city. I was just wondering is there is any chance you could play a little city in Idaho called Idaho Falls?

Senate721

It’s nice to know that 311 is rockin’ your whole family. Our families are fans too. I know that we have played Boise, Idaho before – but I dont think we have been to Idaho Falls. I’ll tell our booking agent to look into it. You never know.

————————————————————-

201. I would like to know if 311 is involved in any charity/fundraising events and if so, which ones?

JADICTION@AOL.COM (Jaime), xmahax@hotmail.com (Maha El-Ghanzouri)

We have played various shows, made donations, and offered specialty items for auction for many charitable causes including: AIDS Research, Rock the Vote, Rock for Choice, Artists for a Hate Free America, Surfrider Foundation, MARS (musicians against racism & sexism), Norml, L.A. Childrens Hospital, Human Rights Action Center, etc…

————————————————————-

202. Do you guys plan on making a return trip to Maine during your next tour?

LIMP_311@hotmail.com, joebil_8@hotmail.com (Joseph Bilancieri), Shooter235@aol.com

We don’t have our itinerary planned yet – but I hope we will get back to Maine.

————————————————————-

203. What does ETSD stand for?

Enlarged to Show Detail. That’s the name of our full-length home movie – featuring live and backstage footage. It’s available on our website merch page and various record stores. Check it out.

————————————————————-

204. What message do you guys want to send to other people out there through your songs and lyrics? Do you think of messages to go out to us kids/teens when listening to your music?

IriaFury@aol.com (Jen), Deanna311@aol.com

I have never really thought of 311 as a message oriented band. We say what we feel. We try not to focus too much on the messages. We haven’t really made a strong political stance or anything. I guess we deal more with personal politics. We are more concerned with creating a vibe and a celebration – then sending a serious message. I guess the main message that we have sent out is “Stay Positive.” We try to promote positivity and unity. We have also spoken out against racism, sexism and domestic abuse (ie: songs like Silver and DLMD). We are also vocal about our stance on the decriminalization of marijuana laws and for the existence of extraterrestrial life.

————————————————————-

205. I was wondering how much of your personal beliefs goes into the lyrics of your songs?

mtorpey@mail.colgate.edu (Michael Torpey)

Most of the lyrics are based on personal experiences and beliefs, but many of them are also universal experiences that everyone can relate to depending on their interpretation.

————————————————————-

206. As a girly-girl 311 fan, I was just wondering what you guys think of having girls in your pits and in your fan spectrum, as well as guys? I’ve been told that it’s weird that I’m a girl and I like music where female fans are the minority.

Enew311 (Liz Newman)

We love having girls in our “fan spectrum.” It’s really cool to see girls rockin’ out as hard as the guys. We have always liked having a mixed and diverse audience. Everyone is welcome to join the celebration.

————————————————————-

207. In what way will the new album be different, in terms of how progressive it sounds, lyric content, and what experiences were used to write the songs?

Skamanjoey@aol.com (Joey Santiago)

It’s hard to say exactly how it will be different. I think it will be different just because we have been through different life experiences since the last record and the music and lyrical content will be effected by those experiences. We’re also more experienced with studio technology so we are able to take a more creative and hands-on approach to recording which will probably effect things.

————————————————————-

208. Are any of you married, have serious girlfriends or have kids?

bsmellers80@yahoo.com (Melanie Watkins), deftones_11@yahoo.com (kris shepherd), KerryVent@aol.com (Kerry), foodking24@aol.com, IL0vE311@aol.com (Deena “Martinez”), milesclan@hotmail.com, jlstan@iquest.net, DPEPI@aol.com (Holly), Cscott70 (Ashley)

No one in the band is married (yet). Our sound man Scotch Ralston and our drum tech Yeti both got married in 1998 (not to eachother). No band members have children.

————————————————————-

209. Do you all live together, or do you have separate houses?

meldude80@hotmail.com (Melanie)

We used to all live together – now we all have separate houses. Our houses are all pretty close together. Most of us live in the Hollywood Hills. P-Nut and Chad can see eachother’s houses from their balconies.

————————————————————-

210. Within the upcoming years, how do you see music changing, and how do you think 311’s music will change?

Vitamin311@aol.com

I guess technology is changing music – so there’s a lot of electronic elements in contemporary music. But that is also probably going to create a backlash and people will yearn for more straight up organic rock with just guitar/bass/drums. I don’t know where 311 will fit in to future musical trends. I think we have always been a little bit progressive.

————————————————————-

211. Do you guys know a title yet for the new album?

sarahf@ccomm.com, m311gurl@hotmail.com, EO36@aol.com, hoobustank_@hotmail.com, Unknown941@aol.com, kudlz311@yahoo.com (Jennifer Heil), woohoo311@hotmail.com (Robert Glennn), lmyers@richmond.edu, JohnL1080

We don’t have a title yet. Hopefully one will just come to us in our sleep.

————————————————————-

212. I was wondering if 311 was going to come to Birmingham, Alabama on their upcoming tour in mid-September/mid-October?

Roxybv3 (Erin)

I’m pretty sure that we will plan a Birmingham show.

————————————————————-

213. ‘Hive’ is my favorite song that 311 has released. Is there any particular theme to the song or is it just a collection of ideas and themes?

TAD311@hotmail.com

The main theme of that song deals with “Go for self” vs. “Go for the Hive.” During the Grassroots tour, when someone was being selfish we would say that they were “going for self” – but when someone was being unselfish to help out everyone in the 311 organization – we would say that they were “going for the Hive.” It evolved into a song.

————————————————————-

214. I always hear people saying that people who became acquainted with 311 through the blue album aren’t true fans, or are less loyal than fans who have been fans since the beginning, so I was wondering, how do you feel about new fans vs. old fans, does it matter to you?

Bubbmeister@alloymail.com, sahandm@earthlink.net, SHAWN_WALSH@Non-HP-Andover-om3.om.hp.com

It really doesn’t matter to us. I mean we love our old-school hardcore fans that have been around since the beginning and we will always have a special relationship with them – but we also respect our new fans. We are not elitist or judgemental when it comes to our fans and I think that anyone who really loves the music can be a ‘true fan’, no matter how old they are or how many 311 records they own. Some people just get turned on to music before other people. It’s like that with every band.

————————————————————-

215. How Does It Feel To Have The Solid Fan Base That You Have?

nickhecksum@hotmail.com

It is really very important to us. We appreciate how loyal and cool our old-school fans have been. A lot of fans have been with us for as many as 7 years – that’s solid – and we appreciate that.

————————————————————-

216. Are you planning to add Little Rock to those tour dates?

KornKix420 (Wesley “Ripping the Bong” Bland)

We should hit Little Rock at some point on the tour. I don’t know exactly when.

————————————————————-

217. How come you guys never told anyone about the hidden “intro” before song one, on Transistor? What a great surprise!

mpmulgrew@csupomona.edu

Surprise, surprise….

————————————————————-

218. Hey, I am in a band, and I was wondering if you have any pointers on what steps you should take to try and get signed to a record label?

Wing22 (Joe)

I don’t think there is any easy answer to that. There is definitely no simple formula that you can follow to try and get a record deal. I guess the best steps are to just keep writing, recording and performing. Building up a big following in your hometown can sometimes get record company’s attention. Once you gain some experience and once you have recorded your best songs then try to get them to record companies. Sometimes managers or music attorneys can help you with that process. Be patient.

————————————————————-

219. What are your feelings on the current state of music today, in particular what MTV is pushing on America’s youth. First of all, so many songs now sound the same. Second, I personally think there could be nothing worse than seeing N’Synch and Backstreet Boys all the time, and was wondering what your thoughts were on these label-contrived bands.

martinj5@miavx1.muohio.edu (Jim Martin), HeXoXo 311@aol.com, The311Fan4@aol.com (Alyssa Rankin ), H20SKICURM, masarava@uclink4.berkeley.edu,

The current state of music today is really what you make of it. There is a lot of good stuff out there – sometimes you just have to dig for it. It might not be on the radio and it might not be on MTV. Sometimes when it seems like there is no good new music – we go back and re-discover some of the classics. There have always been popular boy bands like n’synch, backstreet boys, etc.. It’s not our taste – but somebody obviously likes them. To each his own.

————————————————————-

220. I was wondering what the significance of Macapa Drive is in Random?

PLAYING311 (Kelly)

We used to live in a house on Macapa Drive in Los Angeles.

————————————————————-

221. What do the characters on the Transistor poster symbolize?

Okriste311@aol.com (Kristie)

(Nick): The tubes with the figure inside represent “transistors.” They are infinite and they symbolize my belief that we are all part of the same electrical energy – we are all connected and we are all part of the same force. The characters are for your own interpretation.

————————————————————-

222. On Grassroots, why are the songs Offbeat Bare Ass and Lucky switched? Lucky is the second song, but listed13th on the lyric sheet inside the CD and Offbeat Bare Ass is the 13th song, but listed second?

Surf TSR (Adam)

Because 7 is considered a “lucky” number and 1 is the “loneliest” number.

————————————————————-

223. About Grassroots, why does the lyrics to Lose and Salsa not seem to fit what Nick is saying?

tim__myhuny@hotmail.com

We were trying to confuse you (ha).

————————————————————-

224. Is Hexum going to rap more on the new record, because he didn’t rap too much on Transistor? What’s the vocal style going to be on the next record?

campochon2@yahoo.com (Ian Campopiano), mr_rogers_311@hotmail.com

There should be a mix of vocal styles – singing & rapping.

————————————————————-

225. When selecting songs for a new album, do you guys consider how the songs compliment one another based on track order, or do you simply pick the best songs from the lot?

sfquinn@princeton.edu

We try and pick the best songs, but it is also important to us that they flow together. Like on the Blue Album – we all liked the song “Gap”, but we didn’t think it really fit on the album – so we used it as an outtake instead.

————————————————————-

226. Would you happen to know the next time you’ll be playing in the New York / CT. area?

MTALHEAD81, sloeezpass@yahoo.com (charlie conti), Neilsy7@aol.com

Probably mid-September or October.

————————————————————-

227. What is the songwriting process, is it vocals and melody, then music or the other way around?

bravoavocado@hotmail.com The Bravo Avocado Band (Stamford Ct.)

It varies, but usually we write the music first then add the vocals.

————————————————————-

228. Has the band ever been in a slump so bad that breaking up was considered?

Jbutler311 (Jordan Butler), yatsguitar@aol.com (John Yatsko)

We have been together for a really long time so we have been through lots of good times and bad times – but we’ve never really considered a breakup. Even after our touring RV blew up and destroyed all our clothes, equipment and money – it seemed like our career would be over or stalled – but we stuck together and we kept on. I think that maybe since we all kind of grew up together that we have a pretty strong bond. We don’t even really fight. We have a lot of respect for eachother and we’re pretty democratic.

————————————————————-

229. Do you ever get tired of not getting all the respect and airplay you deserve from the media, so that it makes you want to be like all those other great bands and just “sell out”, by creating music you know will get you airplay?

tigar_hex@alloymail.com (Lizzi)

We have never compromised our sound or our approach to music. From the beginning we decided to take a slow growth approach to the music business. We wanted to grow slowly and to build a grassroots fanbase of people who cared about the music. We knew our music was different so we knew it was going to take the media awhile to catch on to us. We stuck with it and the media caught on.

————————————————————-

230. In ‘Transistor’, and the previous albums, there are lyrics about astronomy and metaphysics and consciousness. I think it is so awesome that you are interested in things like that, because not many bands are, and it’s refreshing to hear something profound. I am a “Space-Trippin’ Vato of the Stars” as well, so ‘Transistor’ meant a lot to me. Are there going to be more lyrics like the ones in “The Continuous Life” and “Galaxy” on the new album?

Starla311@aol.com (~*Kristy*~)

Astronomy, metaphsics & consciousness are influences on our lives and therefore will inevitably be influences on our music. I’m sure there will be some lyrical references to these concepts. We haven’t written all the lyrics yet – so it’s still too early to say.

————————————————————-

231. I was just wondering what your feelings were towards kids covering your music?

LuckyPVM@aol.com

I think it is totally cool if bands want to cover our songs. Some of us used to play in cover bands – so we know what it’s like. It’s flattering really.

————————————————————-

232. Are your plans for the new album going to include more “dual rhymes” like on Grassroots. I missed that on ‘Transistor’. I would like to hear more of that because it really grooves.

fury88@iname.com (Matt Fury)

We have already written a few songs with “dual rhymes”, so I think you will probably hear a bit more of that on the new album.

————————————————————-

233. I wanted to know if 311 was ever a musical guest on Saturday Night Live?

Socer64311@aol.com (Steve Meagher)

No, we haven’t done SNL – but we would like to.

————————————————————-

234. Growing up in Omaha, did you find it difficult to get noticed outside Nebraska, and how hard was it for an Omaha band to get a recording contract?

dlangert@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu (Dan Langert), PhatRhymez (chris)

We all enjoyed growing up in Nebraska. There was a pretty cool and supportive local music scene there when we were starting. I think the fact that we became so popular in Omaha and surronding areas was a major reason why we ultimately got a recording contract.

————————————————————-

235. 311’s music reflects many styles and influences. Over the past few years a shift in popularity has occurred (at least in the Mid Atlantic) from Alternative to Hip Hop / Rap. Since 311’s music covers a broad scope of various genres, what, if any, impact has 311 had to make this change in taste more acceptable to the mainstream?

Tamiami5@aol.com (Chris & Jenny Dunn)

I don’t know exactly what our impact has been. If anything, I guess because we have been somewhat successful at combining diverse styles of music (rock, hip-hop, reggae, funk), other bands that blend styles have been able to emerge. There are a whole bunch of young bands that are fusing styles now. I also think it’s cool that maybe we have turned some people on to hip-hop or funk or reggae music – even though we are primarily a rock band.

————————————————————-

236. Because your sound and message is based upon positive energy and having a good time, do you hesitate to write a song that sounds angry and pissed off because of the vibe it sends to the fans?

jgaspar@up.edu (Joe Gaspar)

I think that anger, fear, paranoia, depression, etc.. are legitimate emotions. They are definitely worthy of writing about. We don’t really hesitate to write songs that are dark or sound angry – we have always just tried to look at the bright side – so most of our songs are based on positive energy. There are still parts on all of our albums that touch on the darker side of life and some darker themes will be explored on the new album.

————————————————————-

238. Will the new album have multimedia capabilities like for instance Incubus and The Urge?

Mark311@ticnet.com, lexi@palmnet.net (Mike & Jaime)

We haven’t decided yet. Maybe.

————————————————————-

239. Could you please explain how 311 has changed over the years and how the changes have not been ‘selling out’, but an evolution (or whatever you would describe it as)? Do you see your next album following the same course of change, or will it be more similar to any of the previous albums?

heathc@union.edu (chris heath), jlang@justice.loyola.edu, willy110@excite.com

Music evolves like people evolve. You go through new life experiences, new relationships, new travels, new realms of consciousness and it effects who you are and what you do. Looking at the big picture, we dont think 311 has really changed all that much. We have always mixed styles of music – mostly rock, hip-hop, reggae & funk. We have always written combinations of hard rockin’ songs with some more laid-back melodic songs. We have always switched between rapping and singing and we have always incorporated melody & harmony in our music. We have always loved playing energetic live concerts. I guess some relatively new changes have been adding more of SA’s scratching and DJ work, experimenting with new studio technologies, experimenting with more musical styles (jazz, dub, electronica). This is all part of the musical evolution. We don’t consider anything that we have done to be ‘selling out.’ We have never compromised the integrity of this band for success. That’s why it took us so long to break out. We have always done things our way and we always will. The new record will have elements of all our past albums – but it won’t really mimic any of them – it will be a step into the future with its roots in the past.

————————————————————-

240. If we discovered a new galaxy and you were able to have one song be on a probe sent there what would it be?

Birdo311@hotmail.com

————————————————————-

“Galaxy” (of course)!

241. Is there ever a time that you don’t feel like people are thinking about you at any given moment? (in other words, is it hard to deal with people knowing so much about you, thinking about you and idolizing you all of the time?)

MnM3210@aol.com (Emily Spehek)

That’s just part of the music/entertainment business. Our private lives inevitably become more public – whether people learn about us through interviews or song lyrics or websites, etc… It hasn’t really been hard to deal with. We don’t really have any crazy stalkers or anything. Our fans have been very cool.

————————————————————-

242. Me and my friend Alex (a big Deftone fan) always get in trouble in math class over who is a better band. He says he would like you more, but you forgot about your Omaha roots. I say bullsh*t. But I was wondering if anything is gonna be on your next record saluting Omaha, i.e. Omaha Stylee. If not, then what can I say to reassure him that you are still all Omaha?

Sean3389 (sean vest, omaha nebraska)

We are definitely still down with Omaha. We love living in California, but our roots will always be in Omaha. Our families still live there and we still have lots of old friends there. Some of us even went back this year for our High School Reunions. If “Omaha Stylee” wasn’t enough, then how about the new CD “Omaha Sessions”, with the music, show flyers, maps and pictures from the early days. Inside “311 Live”, there’s even a photo of the band wearing Nebraska Cornhusker’s jerseys. That should settle the debate.

————————————————————-

243. Is that SA w/ the “art, art, art” t-shirt in the Omaha Sessions CD sleeve?

crucified99@hotmail.com (rick correa)

Yeah that’s SA with the art, art, art t-shirt. The t-shirt was actually just plain white – but Jay Papke from Pawn Shop Press superimposed the “art, art, art” image from a 311 show flyer onto the shirt.

————————————————————-

244. What are your plans in the future after music, and will you still get high?

Steve Nowowiejski – Nowo311@aol.com

Our future is music and yes we are often high.

————————————————————-

245. Have any of you ever been to Asia? Any beaches there?

moez@tm.net.my (Moez)

We went to Japan last year with the Warped Tour. It was great. We are hoping to go back in January 2000. We didn’t see any beaches, but we rode the tallest ferris wheel in the world and we sang at a karaoke bar.

————————————————————-

246. I recently read in a Canadian college & university campus magazine that 311 didn’t like or enjoy their shows in Canada. And that they don’t favour coming back to Toronto or Montreal. Is that true? It was just a short little piece in the rumours section, and I dont know where they got their info from.

Steve_cute@hotmail.com, christod@idirect.com (Chris Tod), Zimbo_311@hotmail.com, osh311@yahoo.com (darren)

Our Canadian shows during the “Transistor” tour were cool and we definitely plan on going back to Canada. We did have a rough time in Canada during the “Music” tour… Our RV broke down and we were stranded in Vancouver for four days. It was pretty frustrating, but we survived.

————————————————————-

247. I have always wondered what T & P means in the song T&P Combo (blue album)?

etzcornb@citrine.indstate.edu (Bruce Etzcorn)

(T)im & (P)-Nut. They co-wrote the song, so it is named after them.

————————————————————-

248. Will the band be appearing on the “Friends of Fishbone” album?

mccorkle@usmh.usmd.edu (Christopher McCorkle)

We love Fishbone. We went to see them at the Key Club in LA last week. They are living legends and huge influences for us. I don’t know if we are going to be on the “Friends of Fishbone” album – we are so busy doing our own project right now – but who knows.

————————————————————-

249. Can you please play more shows in Michigan?

trussken@pilot.msu.edu, magmyster311@hotmail.com (maggie kantola), Maven16@aol.com

I’m sure we will go to Detroit and maybe Grand Rapids. Be there!

250. What kind of cars do you guys have?

matt311bizkit@yahoo.com, p_nut86@hotmail.com (Shane Mickelson), Hive16

SA – Mach 1

P-Nut – Toyota Land Cruiser

Tim – GMC Yukon

Chad – GMC Yukon

Nick – Porsche

————————————————————-

251. Will you please come to Austin, College Station or San Antonio, TX when ya’ll start touring?

irie311@hotmail.com (Andrea Dawn), jdb3893@unix.tamu.edu

We don’t know which cities yet – but we will definitely be in TX. We like playing there.

————————————————————-

252. In the majority of the new songs, does Nick play guitar?

grassrot_311@hotmail.com (nick best), slepovr311@hotmail.com

Nick plays guitar on quite a few of the new songs.

————————————————————-

253. Are there any new song names that you could list?

incubus_311@hotmail.com, Spartacus2_37@yahoo.com

Flowing, Large in the Margin, Eons, Sever, Mindspin…

————————————————————-

254. Are you going to play in some small clubs around Hollywood before you start your big tour?

gogo311_@hotmail.com

We are not going to start out with shows in Hollywood. We want to start the tour in some more low-key markets then we’ll rock Hollywood.

————————————————————-

255. In Jackolantern’s Weather, Nick says “Give a fat shout out to the Phunk Junkeez”. I was wondering just how you guys became friends with the Phunk Junkeez?

three11nut@hotmail.com (Sean Conroy), jayadev9@frontiernet.net

I think we met the Phunk Junkeez at a big festival show in their hometown of Phoenix. Those guys are wild. We’ve played some great shows together.

————————————————————-

256. You guys have said that you spend your spare time working out. I’m curious, how much can each of you bench press?

sk8ordi@hotmail.com

The F.B.I. will not let us distribute such top secret information as a matter of national security.

————————————————————-

257. Is Offbeat Bare Ass a true story…and if so, have any of you ever been booked for possession of marijuana?

tokey_311@yahoo.com

Yes it is a true story. None of us have been booked for possession, but we sure have been hassled at a lot of airports.

————————————————————-

258. Alot of groups now, such as Korn and Limp Bizkit are collaborating with other bands and rappers on their albums, – what do you think about this, and do you see yourselves ever doing it in the future?

h123@infoave.net (justin)

Collaboration is cool. We had the Jamaican toaster Daddy Freddy perform on “Music” and Bobo from Cypress Hill do some percussion on “Transistor.” We don’t have any plans for collaboration on the new album, but you never know… I’m sure we will do it again one of these days.

————————————————————-

259. Are you going to come to Columbus for your new tour? If so come to the Schottenstein Center or Polaris in the summer and not the Newport.

DAN2434 (Dan)

Thanks for the advice. We’ll try to be there for you.

————————————————————-

260. Do you guys see yourselves still making 311 albums in ten years?

J3A1K1@AOL.com, three_11_girly@hotmail.com (Jennifer B), clvsween@worldnet.att.net, XxThree11X (Kathy), KAMluvs311@aol.com

Sure….why not. We’ll keep it going as long as it’s fun and the music is fresh.

————————————————————-

261. How about playing the Philly/ Baltimore area.

Kyle in MD

We’re there.

————————————————————-

262. My life long dream is to play guitar with you guys on stage. I know every song by heart. Would you ever let someone sit in with the band? I dream of that every night.

Funkydog10 (Ryan Siegel), liskonikula@hotmail.com(Finland)

We’ve never had anyone sit in on guitar. That would be pretty interesting. One time in Pittsburgh we came out on stage to do an encore of Feels So Good. SA was already in the dressing room and he didn’t know that we went back on stage. So…I told Adam (our manager) to come out and do SA’s part. It was hilarious.

————————————————————-

263. How did the band record the “live” album with such clarity? It almost sounds like a studio release with crowd samples in it?

Kev4Lynx (Kevin)

There are no overdubs or samples on the live album. Just a nice crisp live recording – thanks to our sound-man, Scotch Ralston. We used a mobile sound truck to record multi-track then we mixed at the Hive studios.

————————————————————-

264. When 311 first started, did you guys ever have the feeling that you would become famous some day?

Mc@Aol.com (Mr Mike), FrikaK@aol.com (Frika Kramer)

We didn’t really contemplate “fame”, but we thought our music was special and we thought that if we kept at it that one day people would catch on in a big way.

————————————————————-

265. Why don’t you all play “Who’s Got The Herb” at your shows?

mfrielsc@osf1.gmu.edu (Matthew B Friel-Scheetz / the Springfield 5)

We do play it. Not every night – but fairly often. It’s on the live album – so there’s proof!

————————————————————-

266. Is there going to be any reggae sounding songs on the upcomming album?

daisylane_311@yahoo.com

There are currently two reggae influenced songs being developed – but they are reggae/rock with distortion guitars and stuff – not really straight reggae.

————————————————————-

267. Is any of the band gonna play anything different for the new album?

y0y0311@hotmail.com (James Erin)

No changes on instruments.

————————————————————-

268. If you could ask your biggest influence one question who would it be and what would you ask them?

LanceNNiky@aol.com

Whoa, too hard to answer…

————————————————————-

269. Will you guys be getting online at your chat palace while recording your new album in the studio?

christie, richmond, va.

Sounds like a good idea.

————————————————————-

270. How important is multimedia and the internet to 311 as a band and why?

cube_star@hotmail.com

It is important to us as a band because it is the future. It is the future of communication – so it will effect all people, all bands, all businesses, etc… Nick is a computer mastermind and the rest of us are all catching up. As a band, we are working on our website, our palace chat room, online chats, etc… We also use a lot of computers and digital/multimedia technology in the studio.

————————————————————-

271. What inspired you guys to be musicians?

flowerz311@hotmail.com

Some of our parents were musicians and we all got turned on to music at an early age.

————————————————————-

272. My fiancee and I are planning on getting married August 14th. I wanted to see if you could come to Austin, Texas and play a gig at my wedding?

dscox@netzero.net (Donald Cox)

Congratulations on your wedding. I dont think we would make a very good wedding band. Your parents probably wouldn’t want to see your first dance together be to “Feels So Good.” In any case, we will not be touring during August – so we won’t be able to make it.

————————————————————-

273. On your recent CD “Omaha Sessions”, it seems like SA does not have many lyrics. I was wondering why?

chrissnipes69@hotmail.com (Chris Snipes), mmorriso@ci.phoenix.az.us

SA doesn’t have a big role on the Omaha Sessions songs because during the recording, SA was not a full member of 311. In the very beginning of our career, SA only did guest appearances with us….then he became a full-fledged member.

————————————————————-

274. Could you play in Maryland on the next tour? Merriweather Post Pavilion would kick some ass.

311_311@excite.com (Scott Shores)

Sounds good…

————————————————————-

275. What kind of routine do you go through to get ready for a show? I imagine it gets hard to get motivated after so many shows.

Prune311

We do some stretching before shows. Chad warms up with a drum pad. Tim & P-Nut warm up with their instruments. SA & Nick sing some vocal scales. The roar of the crowd usually gets us going.

————————————————————-

276. Are you using any outtakes from the Transistor album for the new album?

oakenshield311@hotmail.com, Haindesign@hotmail.com

No, we won’t use any outtakes on the new album.

————————————————————-

277. What’s the story behind Nick working with Lenny Kravitz?

jav@netheaven.com (Billy Wert), Pnut3114u@aol.com

Nick produced a hip-hop and a dancehall remix of Lenny Kravitz’s song “Thinking of You”. The mixes are supposedly being released in Europe, as a maxi-single, in the Spring.

————————————————————-

278. What advice would each of you guys have for someone about to turn 18 and go off to College?

As the tattoo on P-Nut’s leg says, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.” Learn something and have some fun.

————————————————————-

279. How did you guys each feel before leaving home? For the initial trek to LA, then the return and now calling it home. I was just wondering what went through your mind at those early times?

I think we all shared some of the same feelings and emotions. It was obviously a risky move so there were some nerves involved – but it was exciting more than anything else. I think a lot of young people grow up with a dream to “go west.” L.A. is now home for us and we really like it here, but we also have our roots in Omaha.

————————————————————-

280. I was wondering how a fan can meet you when you’re on tour? Is there any way to get backstage passes to your shows? Or do you just have to get lucky and be invited?

LGi8654591 (Lisa Gibson), UnltY4311@aol.com (Laurel Busony), BuD_BoY420@yahoo.com (Jim), k2newman@hotmail.com (Ken Newman)

Backstage passes are generally reserved for band, employees, family and close friends. Sometimes radio stations have contests to set up special meet and greets.

————————————————————-

281. If you could do one thing different in your life what would it be and why?

HuLaGaL311@aol.com, grassroots7@hotmail.com

I don’t know that we would change anything. We all have been through things we wish we could change – but you kind of have to take the good with the bad. Sometimes it’s your f*ck-ups that teach you the most important lessons in life. If we went back and changed something maybe we wouldn’t be who we are now.

————————————————————-

282. I’d like to know what helped each one of you learning the instrument you play…like little tricks or hints to help you get to 311’s level now?

dmistich@netassoc.net (David Mistich)

Practice, determination and intuition.

————————————————————-

283. Are you still planning to record the next record digitally as I read about earlier?

cw43652@navix.net (Dave Wickard)

We are recording the pre-production demos digitally – but the final recording will be done on analog gear. Recording digitally is really convenient and great for pre-production. The individual tracks sound great, but when you put a bunch of digital tracks together they can sound cluttered – so we are going analog.

————————————————————-

284. Many songs have references to the negative qualities of cocaine use (“Firewater,” “Who’s Got the Herb,” “Misdirected Hostility,”…) Why?

NSLIND@MAIL.WM.EDU

Cocaine is just a negative and destructive drug that we do not identify with.

————————————————————-

285. Can you guy’s possibly consider making an album strictly instrumental? Example: the instrumental part in “8:16” and “Nutsymtom”…that would be sweet!!

hartley9@pilot.msu.edu

We have actually talked about doing an instrumental E.P. or something. We’ve recorded instrumentals in the past. The instrumental “Color” is on Transistor. We also recorded an instrumental called “Next” which is an outtake from the blue album. We just finished recording an instrumental called “Calypso” that may find its way onto the new album. We’ll see….

————————————————————-

286. I would like to ask 311 if they would ever come and visit their biggest fan. I would really like to meet 311 in person and ask them a few questions.

Ramswank (Christopher)

Maybe you will meet us at a show someday…Who knows what the future will bring.

————————————————————-

287. How often are the 311 band members online? Every day? Every week? Once a month?

skater311_nimrod@hotmail.com (Hilary Meaney)

It varies, but all of us have computers and we usually all go online a little bit every day.

————————————————————-

288. What kinds of things do you do when you are not in the studio or on tour?

Pisces3_17@hotmail.com, Sawred1173, WtrSkiGrl6

Watch movies, relax, write music, listen to music, play basketball, shoot pool, go swimming, read, hang out with friends, bowl, travel, play video games, etc…..

————————————————————-

289. I was just wondering if any of the guys would consider dating a 16 year old girl that lives in Baton Rouge?

ThUgGrL311@aol.com (Shannon)

Let’s just be friends. Ok?

————————————————————-

290. Since you guys are working with producer Hugh Padgham on the new album, and that The Police is the only band I love more than 311, I’d like to know if any of you are avid Police fans?

bf17898@binghamton.edu (Dave)

We all dig the Police. They were a really great band with some classic albums. And they were playing punk-reggae… Most people don’t realize how innovative they were.

————————————————————-

291. Is 311 selling out? Why are you guys waiting so long to release the new CD? Also why are you releasing a single in September and waiting until October to release the CD? Is this an example of marketing strategies used by bands that want to build up anticipation for the release of their CD? Also why did you announce that the new album will be “up tempo”? Are you guys trying to make your music more “easily digestible”?

jkemp1@utk.edu, Bizkit3111@aol.com, willy110@excite.com

311 has never been about selling out. We are not “waiting” to put out the next record, we are just taking a long time to make it – because we want to do it right. If we were “selling out” we would rush out some trendy crap just to capitalize on our current popularity. We want to take our time so that we can release a record that we are proud of and that you will hopefully love. All bands release their first single a month or two before the release of the record – that’s just the way it has always been. We’ve done that since “Music.” That is done to create some anticipation for the CD release – but is there anything really wrong with that? Anticipation is the spice of life. Anticipating a kiss, anticipating a good meal, anticipating a party, anticipating a concert…that feeling is one of the joys of life. We announced that the new music will be “up tempo’ – because a lot of fans were asking how the new music sounds compared to “Transistor.” So we answered that it will probably be more up-tempo and more rockin’. Finally, we have never tried to make our music “easily digestible.” We will always do it our way. Don’t worry…we haven’t lost touch – but thanks for your concern.

————————————————————-

292. What did you guys do on February 23 (the day that marked 311 days until the new millenium)?

as4603rddwal@infoave.net (eric)

We were in the studio working on millenium music.

————————————————————-

293. How close are you guys as friends off the stage?

Tryq@aol.com

We’re all very close. We always enjoy hanging out together – but we also give eachother lots of space when we are off the road.

————————————————————-

294. Being such a grassroots band, how were you affected/changed by the sudden growth in mass popularity?.

XC311@aol.com (Jason)

I’m sure we’ve changed in some subtle ways – but it’s just inevitable that all people change with time and experience. I think we are still firmly in touch with our roots. We’ve had some success, but we are not really a household name and we like that. We still feel like we’re part of the underground. We don’t plan on becoming assholes anytime soon.

————————————————————-

293. Where can I find the Transistor B-sides (outtakes)? Are you guys ever planning to release them?

phoney311@aol.com, N00NCH

They haven’t been released. No plans yet.

————————————————————-

294. Will 311 be visiting central New Jersey after the fifth album is done?

Maybe.

————————————————————-

294. I have always deep in my heart wanted to be a singer/songwriter, but all my life everybody in my family has told me that I would never be good enough. My friends say that I am, but sometimes I have doubts. So I guess my question is how do you keep going? How do you keep your self motivated when everybody tells you that your just down right no good??

offbeatbareass31@hotmail.com (ROBIN WOOD)

You just need to believe in your self and your own talents.

From the song “All Mixed Up”….

“you’ve got to trust your instincts and let go of regret, you’ve got to bet on yourself now star, cause that’s your best bet.”

————————————————————-

295. How many tracks will be on the new CD?

sexton311@hotmail.com (Robert Glenn), RiversStar

Hopefully around 15.

————————————————————-

296. How would you describe the change of music from your “What Have You Records” releases to your Capricorn releases?

(graham)

Natural musical evolution.

————————————————————-

297. Back in the early 90’s, if you guys had received a Grammy (or any other award), who would you have thanked and would your answer change if you were receiving an award now?

Mroxy311@aol.com

We’d thank our families, our record label, our management and our fans.

————————————————————-

298. How much bud do you guys smoke in a day? week? Which ever one is easier to calculate.

SKAFISH420@aol.com (Ranay)

Who’s got the calculator?

————————————————————-

299. Who originally did the song “Who’s Got the Herb?”…… I know it was written by Paul Hudson/Earl Hudson/David Byers… but what was the name of their band?

SKAFISH420@aol.com (Ranay)

HR – the lead singer for Bad Brains.

300. I was just wondering if you guys could go through another ticket agency when you tour next. I think that Ticketmaster is a major rip-off with all their additional charges. Any chance you could do that?

kavtriv@utdallas.edu (Kavita Trivedi)

We think the additional charges are a rip-off too. Unfortunately there is not much that we can do about it. Pearl Jam tried to wage a battle with Ticketmaster and essentially they lost. Ticketmaster just has a monopoly on the industry. What Pearl Jam realized was that using another agency didn’t really bring the ticket prices down very much. Maybe 25 cents. The best thing to do is buy your tickets directly from the venue box office – that way there is usually no ticket charge.

————————————————————-

301. When you guys go back on tour, what are the chances of you coming to Lawrence, Kansas and playing at a nice chill place like the Bottleneck?

Meesh311@aol.com (Michelle Holt)

That sounds perfect. We are considering that.

————————————————————-

302. Which have you found that you like better, playing in clubs (when you weren’t that well-known and your songs hadn’t been played on the radio yet), or playing at big venues all over and hearing thousands of screaming fans that would die to meet you?

Amyt311@aol.com

We have really enjoyed both experiences. It’s great to play big shows, but it’s always nice to get intimate and rock in a small, sweaty club.

————————————————————-

303. I was bamboozled to see one of your platinum albums on the wall at Albums on the Hill in Boulder, CO. The owner said that he knew you guys and that you used to shop at his store back in the day when you played the Fox Theater. I just wanted to know if you remember the shop and if there is any chance of another Fox Theater show?

Dave

Yeah we remember the shop. Cool people. They always put our posters in the store window when we come to Colorado. Of course there will be another Fox Theatre show. We love that place.

————————————————————-

304. I just recently bought Dial 7’s CD and when I was listening to them, their music and sound seemed very similar to yours. Do you like this group and what do you think of other bands that sound like you?

mbraden@uiuc.edu

(Nick): I just saw them open for Fishbone in LA. They were dope. I think it’s cool that other bands are blending musical genres like 311.

————————————————————-

305. With the recent announcement of Woodstock ’99, many people are wondering who will be playing there. 311 would be a perfect fit at Woodstock, sharing many of the ideals of the festival…peace, love, music. Are you thinking about playing??

poisoncrazylush7@hotmail.com (Tara), joreilly@elmira.edu (Jenny O’Reilly)

It would be cool – but we will be busy with the new record.

————————————————————-

306. My fiancee’ and I are setting our wedding date to be (3-11 Day) March 11, 2000. I was wondering if maybe the band could play at my bachelor party or at the wedding , or heck, even be IN the wedding. It is only fitting, as it was over a discussion about 311 while “Down” was playing in the college cafeteria that I met my future wife.

jlade@luna.cas.usf.edu (James Lade (SOC))

Glad that we brought you together. Congratulations.

————————————————————-

307. What is the significance of the noise on the last track of “Transistor” at the very end of the song?

diggity_big_b@hotmail.com, COOLBOY333

That is an actual recording of outer space.

————————————————————-

308. Do you do anything special for your fans? For example put on contests to actually meet you or give autographed pictures of you?

WiLdGrL311 (Christine)

Well….yes…and you are participating in it. 11 contest winners from this Q&A will get some special autographed items from us.

————————————————————-

309. What do you think of your younger fans?

PyXs311@yahoo.com (Brittany), y0y0311@aol.com

The young fans are usually the most excitable – they’re not afraid to go crazy and we like that.

————————————————————-

310. Is the stuff you win really autographed? or is it fake?

PIEFACEAZ

We never send out fake autographs. Always real.

————————————————————-

311. I am in a band, and when we play, we worry about the crowds reaction. Now that you guys are adored by fans, do you still worry about crowd response or do you focus more on just a good live show?

(Justin Wood)

We don’t really worry about crowd response, but crowd response can make or break a show. The more hyped the crowd gets then the more hyped we get. It’s hard to play to a lame crowd – but you just have to focus on your performance and try to work through it.

————————————————————-

312. I’d love to have the inside scoop as to the smaller venues they are going to play so that we could make a trip to see them a couple times. I like it so much better when it’s smaller and more personal. When will you have an idea and post it on the web-page?

(Kim)

As soon as we know tour dates our manager will post the dates on the website. We probably won’t know until July or August.

————————————————————-

313. My birthday is March11th, 1974, I will be 25 on 311 day. I am pregnant with my first child, and my fiancee and I are crazy about 311. We’ve seen them at least five times already. I was wondering if we could get backstage passes to a show in the New York/ Jersey/Philly area. I want my child to get a little taste of the 311 magic.

kmuehlhauser@furmanselz.com.

Congratulations on your child. We hope he/she will be rockin’ out in the crib to 311. We won’t be touring for 6 or 7 months so your child will get to experience our concert from outside the womb.

————————————————————-

314. How do you have the energy to tour throughout the world and still make great music?

S91053

Touring is definitely very tiring so we usually take a little time off after the tour and then we begin doing most of the writing / recording. Making music is something we all love.

————————————————————-

315. How did ya’ll come up with the 311 logo?

Crumpy191

A company called Pawn Shop Press designed the logo.

————————————————————-

316. Hola…For me it’s trippy to think you have fans in Japan and Europe,. etc., but have you guys ever considered doing shows in Latin America? I know you have fans there.

Sonia

We would love to go to South America to play. We hear the crowds are pretty wild.

————————————————————-

317. Do you guys think that you will be coming to North Carolina or Tennessee when you start touring?

cth95mustang@hotmail.com, Emily Harris

Yes.

————————————————————-

318. Do you happen to know where I could get my hands on “Transistor” on vinyl. I am a DJ in Washington D.C. and desperately want to add this album to my collection.

dslight@erols.com (Charles)

From Capricorn Record’s Sales Department regarding 311 Vinyl.

I believe Transistor and 311 are/were available on vinyl. Their product number’s are (transistor non-edited) 314-536-181-1 and (311 non-edited) 893-942-041-1. The thing is that they may no longer be pressing vinyl since both albums are over a year old; vinyl is almost considered to be a promotional piece and the company cannot afford to have a bunch of product just sitting in a warehouse (space and storage costs). And generally vinyl is not a big seller, so they usually do a limited run and that’s it. However, that may not be the case with these albums, I am just not positive. My best advice is to arm the fan with both product ID #’s, tell them to go to a retailer who orders directly from Polygram (ie Tower, Sam Goody, Musicland, any national chain or even regional chains like Newbury Comics, Homer’s, etc.) Place a special order, identifying the product by it’s number, artist and title. 311 records are distributed by PGD. Good luck.

————————————————————-

319. Do you like doing shows in Utah?

sage2@jps.net (Frank Taylor)

Yeah, we have always enjoyed playing Salt Lake City. It’s a great place to start a tour. We also like to eat at the Red Iguana when we’re there.

————————————————————-

320. If someone were to look back on the state of music in the late 20th – 21st century from100 years in the future, what do you guys most want to be remembered for?

ptori1@aol.com (Courtni Y. Burleson)

If 100 years from now people still remember us – then that will be accomplishment enough. One of the greatest things about playing music is that we have been able to mark time for people. Like if someone hears “Down” on the radio and thinks back to the Summer of ‘96 and says “that was the best summer of my life”…that’s the way we like to be remembered.

————————————————————-

321. I just want to say that you guys have changed my life around from a negative asshole to a possitive anti-racist person, and I am grateful to you for that, thank you ever so much. What do you feel the most important thing in life would be?

scheer311@hotmail.com (John Gordon)

That’s a pretty big question. The most important thing in life is probably – to live your life and not just let it slip by. You have to get out there and experience as much as possible and enjoy yourself.

————————————————————-

322. When you guys write a song and under the credits it lists only Nick’s name for lyrics and music, does that mean Nick wrote the song all by himself or did each of the band mates contribute to it?

redwizardwz@hotmail.com (Mike Johnston)

That means that Nick wrote the song by himself – but everyone in the band ultimately contributes to how the song sounds in its final form by adding a personal touch to their individual performances.

————————————————————-

323. Would there be any chance that I could get an internship with Scotch and learn the ropes and help out on a tour with you guys or in the Hive studio?

afroshane@aol.com

We’ll try to pass your email address on to Scotch and maybe he will have some advice for you.

————————————————————-

324. What is your stance on the widespread bootlegging (and selling) of your music that has been going on for so many years, and is there a chance you might release another live album or maybe a full-length live video in order to help combat this trend?

JRL311@inreach.com

It’s cool that our music and our live recordings are in such demand. The real negative part is that the bootleg stuff is usually recorded poorly – so it sounds crappy, and stores usually charge ridiculous prices for them. That’s why we released the 311 Live CD – so people could get what we feel are really quality live recordings. We may release some more live music/live video in the future.

————————————————————-

325. Why is it the Sci-fi channel is requested by so many people in Hawaii? I really want to know…help me…:)

ROOSTER27@prodigy.net (Lindsay)

Because if you spell Hawaii backwards its “iiawah.”

————————————————————-

326. I read that the band wants to start off their next tour in smaller clubs. I’m in Minneapolis and I can’t even express to you how happy I would be to see 311 at First Ave. or some other club.

Glitrfarey@aol.com

We are going to try to do some smaller venues in all markets. We’ll just have to see…..

————————————————————-

327. Do you think that you will ever play in Athens GA again?

preac@mindspring.com (Brad Martin)

Definite possibility. We did a Halloween show at the Georgia Theatre once and that was a blast.

————————————————————-

328. I just wanted to ask 311 about how they feel about being asked to play on a Bad Brains tribute album.

mahoney420@hotmail.com (ryan hammond)

Bad Brains are a really innovative band that blew our minds back in Omaha – so they have been a big influence on us. We are hoping to cover one of their songs for the Tribute Album.

————————————————————-

329. Have you ever considered making the picture of the playing card, on the inside cover of Grassroots, a poster to sell with you merchandise?

Sabers364@aol.com (Sean Mcgarry )

We used to have some posters like that back in 1994.

————————————————————-

330. My question is mostly directed to Nick and Scotch.Would it be wiser to spend the money on a good computer and good music software rather than going to a pro studio to record my demo?

handleman@usa.net

Either way will work. It’s definitely worth comparing the prices. It will also depend on what type of band, what type of music, what instruments you want to record, what type of room you have to record in, etc… One thing that’s good about doing it yourself on your own equipment is that you learn the actual recording process.

————————————————————-

331. How did living in mid-America influence your sound today?

X311ChiCxX@aol.com (Rebecca)

Living in middle America we kind of absorbed influences and styles from both coasts – so maybe it made us more open-minded about music.

————————————————————-

332. How do you guys feel knowing that your music has changed and saved some of your fans lives?

KMK 3II@AOL.COM

It’s amazing how music can effect peoples lives and moods and we are really happy that our music has had such a positive effect on our fans.

————————————————————-

333. When you were still totally unknown, were you dreaming of special things you would do if you were world famous, and if so, have you done these things?

fremont@ondim.fr (david fremont /FRANCE)

Traveling the world playing music has definitely been a dream come true.

————————————————————-

334. What kind of music (i.e. punk, reggae, rock) were you most influenced by?

MeDig311@aol.com

A combination thereof.

————————————————————-

335. You guys had KoRn open for you a couple times. What do you think of KoRn?

tka@pipeline.com (Peter Ennis)

They rock. It was really cool having them on the road with us. We bump into them in LA sometimes. Much respect.

————————————————————-

336. I read that the new songs will be like Feels so Good. That is one of my favorite songs, but will there be some songs like Do you Right or other reggae songs?

Kloven@mounet.com

I don’t know where you read that – but it’s not really true. The new songs are not going to be just like Feels So Good. We love that song, but we’re not really planning to repeat ourselves. 311 is going to the future…

————————————————————-

337. Tim. What type of distortion do you use, and what other effects do you use to accompany it? i.e. Flange, chorus, reverb, etc.

Vettegrl2

See band instruments on the web-page.

————————————————————-

338. I would like to smoke a JOINT with all you guys.

DankSpert@aol.com, C Hulet, Pnut95@aol.com, ezrider@warwick.net (ryan&paul)

You never know…

————————————————————-

339. What is the most memorable moment of your time in the band?

ttom@erols.com

There have been a lot of memorable moments. One of them was when we played Red Rocks Ampitheatre in Colorado the first time. We had finally come full circle. On our move from Omaha to LA to try to get a record contract we stopped at Red Rocks. We walked into the ampitheatre and looked around and we said “one day were gonna rock this place.” We did.

————————————————————-

340. What advice would you give my band in order to stay together and stay true to the music we play.P.S. If you’re ever in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, come check on me, ok?

shaun_hosein@hotmail.com

The Caribbean sounds nice. Maybe we will come check on you when we’re finished recording and need a nice vacation. One thing that will help you stay together is if you just give eachother mutual respect.

————————————————————-

341. In the song, “Who’s Got the Herb”, there is a part that says something like, “cramacaca cayaca die shocka fryaca from a coppa”, what does this mean?

rsmjdavis@prodigy.net (Christina)

Isn’t it obvious?

————————————————————-

342. Can you imagine ever performing with a different lineup other than you guys right now, or do you feel as though each of the five of you is irreplaceable?

chaos_and_kiwifruit@yahoo.co, steve-speir@microsoft.com (John Speir)

A different lineup would mean a different 311. It just would not be the same. We’re a unit.

————————————————————-

343. Is there a ritual or routine that you guys do before a show to set your gear?

frinkm8389@uni.edu

We have a great crew of stage techs that set up our gear. They know exactly how and where we like our equipment.

————————————————————-

344. You’ve said before that when you started off playing, you were heavily influenced by bands like REM, Smiths, the Cure, etc. Was there a point when you consciously abandoned such styles in favor of the 311 sound or did that just sort of develop “accidentally” over time?

Jim Higgins

It was an accidental / natural development.

————————————————————-

345. Do you plan on touring anytime with large groups like the HORDE Tour, or Warped Tour again?

Sscott7132 (Claudia)

Not any time soon. We are probably just going to do our own thing in ’99.

————————————————————-

346. If you had to give one final performance and be able to only play one last song that would sum up the entire career of 311, what would your final song be and why?

XNix311Hex@aol.com

That would have to be one long ass medley because I don’t think that one song could sum up our entire career. Maybe the medley would be parts of Welcome, Down, Freak Out, Homebrew, Transistor, Hive, Beautiful Disaster, Feels So Good, 1,2,3.

————————————————————-

347.How does the band know when a song is complete and no more recordings are necessary?

Clint315@aol.com, brodel311@hotmail.com

You just feel it.

————————————————————-

348. Will the next disc have some of the style and composure of the 1995 self-titled disc?

rjkjr311@hotmail.com (Ron Kollar Jr.)

We think so.

————————————————————-

349. You grow so much artistically from album to album that, in order to continue to enjoy your music, we, as fans, must be able to grow with you. If you were to one day reach a point where you felt you could “grow no more”, would you 1-assume you’ve reached perfection, 2-hang it up, or 3-take it as a writer’s block of sorts and keep pushing the innovator’s envelope?

bnb109@psu.edu (brandy brubaker)

Nice question… I don’t know. Hopefully we’d take what’s behind door #3.

350. I heard that you guys enjoyed “a few days of running loose in New York City, which is always one of the band’s favorite stops.” I was just wondering, where do you enjoy going when your here in NYC?

Silver1632

Just about anywhere. The city just has so much energy. It’s a huge battery.

————————————————————-

351. What is the combined length of the band’s penises? Just curious.

equinox27@hotmail.com (Autumn)

In Kilometers or Miles?

————————————————————-

352. When you guys tour, what are the 3 best (i.e. loudest, energized, loyal) cities to play in? I’m from Chicago, and I know we all Freak Out when you Do us Right.

mhardman@hubgroup.com (Mike Hardman)

It’s kind of impossible to pick the best three, but Chicago is definitely somewhere up near the top.

————————————————————-

353. Will you be coming to Atlanta, GA? And if you are may I suggest playing The Tabernacle.

kellyanne_k@excite.com (Kelly Young)

Yes. It’s being considered.

————————————————————-

354. Hey, are you guys planning on playing any Transistor songs on the upcoming tour that you didnt on the last tour?

illfigga00@aol.com

Maybe. Only time will tell.

————————————————————-

355. What the hell is up with Dudley on the ETSD video?

haslerka@cda.mrs.umn.edu (Kris10 Hasler)

He’s one of a kind.

————————————————————-

356. Being a huge 311 fan my dream job would be to work in your wardrobe department on tour. I think you all have your own funky, but awesome style! I just graduated with a B.S. degree in fashion merchandising and I was wondering how you guys hire people to work for you and I how I would go about becoming a candidate?

AMINAH22

We dont have a wardrobe department. We just wear whatever. But thanks for your interest.

————————————————————-

357. I wanted to have a live band at my party in June and 311 would be perfect for the occasion. Just think of making this teenage girls dream come true.

DSteph9475@aol.com (Jeannine)

We hope you have a great party but unfortunately, we’re not available in June. We’ll be mixing the record.

————————————————————-

358. 311 has the most phenomenal positive vibe that is unparalleled! In a world that can be so ugly, what is it about your past experiences or your general nature that makes you such positive people?

clfarr@hotmail.com

We are living our dream….we make music for a living – what could be better.

————————————————————-

359. I’m curious what the new albums “theme” is gonna be? Cause Transistor was real spacey, with the titles and music.

unitywith311@hotmail.com (jake ben)

No real theme has developed yet.

————————————————————-

360. Pepsi or co*ke?

its311dollars@hotmail.com

The studio fridge is stocked with Water, 7-Up, Sunkist, Miller High Life, Starbucks Frappacino and Cranberry Juice.

————————————————————-

361. In your earlier albums (music, etc.) you do a lot of the old school music (which I love), then during 311 (blue) you went to more hard core rock. (which I still love) Now, I know a lot of people which like your old and a lot who like the newer stylee, my question is, which type of music (old or new) do you like playing more, why?

HexumHeven@AOL.com

We like playing both.

————————————————————-

362. This isn’t a question but, I’d just like to thank ya’ll for being my favorite band for the last 6 years!

NavCap53

Your Welcome.

————————————————————-

363. People here at Rutgers University, New Jersey call me the Dirty Mexican…Is SA Martinez Mexican? And why do you call him dirty?

sgtlargent@aol.com (Nick & Eric)

Thats right.

————————————————————-

364. Does the band celebrate holidays (Christmas, birthday, new years, etc.) together, or do they normally go back to their families?

A311Buddha@aol.com

We celebrate a lot of holidays together or with family. We try to arrange parties for birthdays. For Christmas and Thanksgiving one of us will cook and have everyone over.

————————————————————-

365. What does hydroponic mean? I looked it up in a dictionary and it said it means growing plants in nutrient-enriched water instead of in soil. Is this what you mean or is it something else?

jaezonn@home.com

Oh yeah.

————————————————————-

366. What bands are 311 friends with?

T311HIve@aol.com

We’ve had great experiences with almost all of the bands that we have toured with. You can develop some great friendships out on the road. I guess some of our closest band friends are The Urge, No Doubt, Korn, Shootyz Groove, Fishbone, Sugar Ray, Goldfinger, etc…

In the liner notes of the Live CD, we thanked many of our band friends.

————————————————————-

367. Do you have any plans to tour in the eastern New Mexico/West Texas area?

jru78@hotmail.com (J.R. Urias), demetril@utep.edu (Demetrio T. Lara), maca1mad (Vanessa)

Maybe El Paso, Santa Fe, etc…

———————————————

368. I am doing a report in school about women in the music industry, and am wondering what you guys think about Courtney Love (from Hole) and PJ Harvey.

BellyAngel

(Tim): I’m a fan of PJ Harvey and have all her records (I think.) I hope she gets back into playing guitar live, although she’s a sexy diva without it. As for Ms. Love, I like Hole’s records “Pretty On The Inside” and “Live Through This.” Some of my favorite women of importance in the music industry are Kim Gordon, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Debby Harry and all of the Red Aunts.

————————————————————-

369. You came to Montreal in November 1997 and I was wondering if you think Montreal is a great city and why ?

nossam@yahoo.com (gmasson) (Genevieve)

(P-Nut): Montreal was cool, but in all thruthfulness we didn’t see that much of it. The people that I met at some live radio interview were really cool and seemed to be obsessed with us, so of course that was pretty cool.

————————————————————-

11. Chad, if you could give any advice to an early drummer, what would it be?

reecelong@juno.com (John R Long)

(Chad): Make sure you are taking lessons and practice. And using a metronome will make you rock like a clock.

————————————————————-

370. Nick and Tim: How did you progress on your instruments or talents?, I am learning electric guitar myself and I want to be a great player in a few years like you guys. Any tips? How do you come up so many cool, random riffs?

TomJoad311@aol.com (Larry Lopes ), gyulai@msn.com, zed242@hotmail.com (Matt)

(Tim): The more time you spend playing and listening and thinking, the more you learn.

————————————————————-

371. From Music to 311 Live, 311 has been able to write, play and record great music while keeping the artistic integrity of the band intact. With the current mergers and downsizing in the music industry putting so much of the focus on the bottom line, is there any pressure from your record company for you to tone down your music and be more “radio friendly” on the new album?

Kai1351@aol.com

Luckily our record company doesn’t interfere in the creative process. They know what we’re about and they let us do our thing. They really don’t put any pressure on us to be ‘radio friendly.’

————————————————————-

372. If you could only do one more thing in your lifetime, that you haven’t already done, what would it be?

estanley@cisunix.unh.edu (eric)

It would be nice to fly.

————————————————————-

373. For the guys with the new puppies. What are their personalities like?

SPECTRUM309@prodigy.net (steve l crittenden)

Spunky, hyper and peeing often.

————————————————————-

374. Has there been a long-term disagreement between 311 and Sublime? If so, why?

jmpnjivn07@aol.com (Nathan Jansen), pnutty@rocketmail.com (Tim Rieder), FLOW311@AOL.COM

As far as we see it, there is no long-term disagreement between 311 and Sublime. We don’t really know them personally, but we dig their music. They played with us once in Santa Barbara, CA – I guess there were some weird vibes at that show, but nothing that would really create a “long-term disagreement.”

————————————————————-

375. I heard that you guys and Sublime (my second fave band after you guys) don’t get along because one of their guys erased some tapes that you needed for a show. I’m not saying that this is true…I’m just wondering?

jim.allegeretti@gte.net

Some magazine printed that Sublime messed with a sampler that we needed for a show on tour. The funny thing is that we don’t even use a sampler on tour. We never have. So, no it’s not true – just a rumor.

————————————————————-

376. Have you ever thought of having a contest for backstage passes? See ya in Chicago (hopefully general admission).

soljacic@pilot.msu.edu

We’ve never personally thrown a contest for passes – we’ll consider that. We are really looking forward to Chicago – maybe the Metro or the Vic or something. We’ll definitely look for a ‘general admission’ building.

————————————————————-

377. This Christmas I recieved an autographed picture from you guys since I was one of the first people to order Omaha Sessions. So I just thought this would be a nice time to thank you.

ezrider@warwick.net (Ryan Friesema NJ)

You’re welcome and thank you too.

————————————————————-

378. I read that you were currently filing a lawsuit on Capricorn Records. I was just wondering if you all are going to be on your own record label or just a different one?

Email: jasonrtst@aol.com

The lawsuit is still pending…so we don’t know what the outcome will be. We issued a statement explaining the lawsuit on our website and we’ll definitely keep you posted as things progress….but right now we’re just focused on writing new songs and preparing for the Fall Tour.
————————————————————-

379. When will there be a new 311 album out?

Email: azimmerli@hotmail.com

The next album will hopefully be out in the Summer of 2001.
————————————————————-

380. Does any of the members of 311 plan to do do anything with other bands? If so, what bands?

Email: atwellerart@excite.com

311 recently did a remix collaboration with Black Eyed Peas on a song called BEP Empire. In the intro of the song, Will from BEP sings “BEP & 311 collaborate.” Nick also just wrote and recorded some vocals on a song for an electronic band called Cirrus.
————————————————————-

381. Is there another movie like ‘Enlarged to Show Detail’ coming out?

Email: kmorgan@trinity.edu

We’re working on our next home movie. Our friend Brian Smith has been documenting us for the past few years and we have a lot of great new footage. We don’t know when it will be released, but there is definitely another movie coming out sometime next year.
————————————————————-

382. Will 311 do another 311 Day for 2001? If so any idea where?

Email: jroylsu@aol.com

We definitely want to make 311 Day an annual celebration. 3-11-2000 in New Orleans was an amazing experience. It will be hard to top that one. We don’t have any plans for 3-11-2001 at this time, but we’ll keep you posted.
————————————————————-

383. Where did the name “311” come from and what does it mean?

Email: Jimidelarocha@aol.com

The name originally comes from the Omaha police code for “indecent exposure.”

The actual story can be found elsewhere in the Q&A.; Check it out.
————————————————————-

384. Will you guys come out with a cd with your best hits?

Email: paulmetzler86@hotmail.com

We don’t have a plan for a greatest hits cd in the US. I guess eventually we might put one out.
————————————————————-

385. Does any of the band members have any secret songs that the public hasn’t heard yet?

Email: wfpackers@hotmail.com

We’ve been working in our studio for the past several months writing a bunch of “secret” songs that the public hasn’t heard yet. The new songs are amazing and we’re looking forward to playing some of them for you during the Fall Tour. So…we’ll see you at the shows!
————————————————————-

386. Since you guys seem to be extremely open minded and adventuresome…I was just wondering if any of you have, or have at least considered skydiving?

Email: starshines_angel@hotmail.com

(Nick) I definitely want to sky dive. We have made plans to do it that have fallen through. I’ve bungie-jumped lots of times though.
————————————————————-

387. What do you guys eat for breakfast?

Email: jess1ca311@aol.com

(Nick) Maybe a Red Bull and an apple or Power Bar. I’m always heading out to the Hive real early, like 9:30. Practice starts at noon. SA shows around 12:30. No one knows why.

(P-Nut) Coffee

(Tim) Egg white omlette with tomato, onion, and spinach, breakfast potatoes, wheat toast.

(Chad) I am always changing my breakfast menu, but lately it’s been one glass of apple, carrot, tangerine, grape juice (extracted with a juicer) and toast. And I love cereal in the middle of the day.

(SA) I’m spoiled when it comes to breakfast. Jenny will make me anything I desire. Somedays it’s eggs & turkey bacon, others it’s muffins & smoothies.
————————————————————-

388. How much longer do you guys think you will be making music? P-Nut said for at least another decade. Do you think you will have the same amount of energy on stage when most of you will be 40?

Email: chssoccr14@hotmail.com

(Nick) I can see us making music for ten more years. Hell yeah. We’re having so much fun now. I’m sure that we’ll keep evolving though. As a player gets more skill he or she is naturally drawn to more difficult styles like jazz rather than just rocking out. Will we have less energy? Not less, just different.
————————————————————-

389. If you could go anywhere in space (planets, galaxies, etc.) were would you go?

Email: ronda311@juno.com

(Nick) Any of that would be enough for me, I wouldn’t get picky.

(Tim) Back in time to see Jimi Hendrix and Led Zepplin in their prime, back in the day.

(Chad) Everywhere at once, if I could.

(SA) Man, I would love to check the whole place out & I guess I have all of eternity to do that. In the meantime I would check out the solar system we inhabit, particulary Mars.
————————————————————-

390. Why did P-Nut cut his dreads?

Email: pitzu311@beer.com

(P-Nut) I like to look at a different person in the mirror as much as possible, not that I don’t like myself, quite the contrary, it’s just fun. I suppose. hehe.
————————————————————-

391. Why did Nick move to Germany?

Email: divah311@gurlmail.com

(Nick) To seek adventure. I thought starting a band there would be cool but the musicians there were not feeling the funk.
————————————————————-

392. What kind of metronomes does Chad use to practice with?

Email: mikey

(Chad) Tama Rhythm Watch, Model RW 100.
————————————————————-

393. How did SA get his name? The biggest mystery of all mankind.

Email: voodoo2735@aol.com

(SA) Nick started to call me SA when he moved back to Nebraska from California.
————————————————————-

394. Have you guys played Slinky live in any of your shows? If not or if it’s a rarity, why? That song is amazing and I’d love to hear it live.

Email: littleg83@hotmail.com

(Nick) That song is retired. To play a song well we have to still be into it.
————————————————————-

395. What city/state goes the craziest when you play?

Email: Fliprec94@aol.com

(Nick) Last tour it was Orange County, CA. They started doing some crazy tribal dance around homemade bonfires.

(P-Nut) Probably Atlanta and New Orleans tie.

(Tim) ?, but I tend to go the craziest in New Orleans.

(Chad) Atlanta, New Orleans, Denver, Los Angeles, Utah.

(SA) That is such a hard question. I would say that each place goes off in its own way.
————————————————————-

396. Hey miT! At what age did you start playing guitar?

Email: Legodoggy@aol.com

13 or 14
————————————————————-

397. If you guys didn’t have a music career, what would you be doing?

Email: mhsdiva412@yahoo.com

(Nick) Making software for musicians.

(P-Nut) I was teaching bass before I left the big O and was having fun at it, so I guess I would try to keep that up, but it didn’t really pay that much. But my dream job, besides playing bass in a kick ass band with people I care about, would have to be directing movies that make people want to make movies, too.

(Tim) Studying kundalini yoga.

(Chad) An antartica fisherman, wide receiver or actor.

(SA) Trying to establish one.
————————————————————-

398. Nick- are “Stealing Happy Hours” and “Use of Time” similar in any way? What do they mean?

Email: digs12@hotmail.com

(Nick) They’re not similar to me. Use of Time is about being depressed. Stealing Happy Hours is about having fun.
————————————————————-

399. I noticed that you guys had some kind of alien skull on the amps behind P-nut. Does the skull head have any significance to the show or the music, or is it just something cool you guys bring along?

Email: the311beaver@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) It’s something cool that we bring along, but it got a head injury, and probably won’t be coming along again, unless we get some reconstuctive surgery.

400. After doing research, I noticed there seems to be much history behind doing Halloween shows in Georgia..is there any specific reason, or tradition behind this, or is it just coincidence?

(Nick) Let’s call it a tradition. Why not? Atlanta rocks.
————————————————————-

401. SA – can you see yourself as an angel?

Email: frankiev@butthair.com

(SA) Well once in grade school I played ” the monotone angel who wanted to sing in the Christmas choir”. Does that count?
————————————————————-

402. What is a Transistor?

Email: pettibone311@excite.com

(Nick) Every life form on the planet, be it animal or vegetable, is a conductor, or transistor of the same life force that runs through us all. It’s a kind of scientific spirituality.
————————————————————-

402. Out of all your guys songs…which would you say is the most fun for you to play live?

Email: cheesewagon182@hotmail.com

(Nick) Freak Out is a classic that comes to my mind.

(P-Nut) Probably Freak Out, it just seems to move the crowd and us in a great way.

(Tim) They are all fun to play, it’s hard to pick a fav.
————————————————————-

403. If you knew the world was going to end in 24 hours, where would you spend your time?

Email: meg03110@netzero.net

(Nick) Probably on the phone saying goodbye to people. Either that or playing a huge gig near Car Henge in Nebraska.

(P-Nut) With my fiance’ out on some mountain and/or the beach, gotta bring the doggy, too, can’t forget her crazy ass.
————————————————————-

404. My question is for Chad…I am a drummer, and I love to play your stuff. I am wondering how it is that you came across your personal style of drumming?

Email: PunkBoy034@hotmail.com

I believe through years of influence in different styles of music, and by different drummers.
————————————————————-

405. Is Nick Hexum really 6ft 3(in)?

Email: jcline@fuse.net

(Nick) At least!
————————————————————-

406. This question is for my boy SA. I’ve never heard the full story of how u got into 311, how did it come about?

Email: DJ Zebulon 311@aol.com

(SA) I got into 311 by hooking up with Chad in college. I was always laying raps on him and one day he invited me to sit in on a rehearsal. The rest is history.
————————————————————-

407. How does it feel that when you come out on the stage and everyone is there to see you?

Email: Dana-311@home.com

(Nick) It’s the best high in the world. When you find a high for which there is no hangover or drawback, then you know you’ve found your purpose in life.

(P-Nut) It takes away any tiredness, tightness, timidness, and/or tension. In fact, that feeling is a cure all, if there is such a thing.

(Tim) It’s fun to rock.

(Chad) Its hard to pin down that feeling…excitement mixed with a little bit of nervousness while trying to focus and concentrate.

(SA) Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
————————————————————-

408. Were any of you ever caught by your parents smoking bud?

(Nick) My dad found a little sack of weed in my jeans once when I was around 16. He gave it back to me and gave me some Pharmacological studies on marijuana to look over. He’s a scientist and he wanted me to be informed on fact instead of propaganda. The study said that marijuana did not have greater risks and negative effects than legal drugs such as alcohol, caffeine, or tobacco. My dad rules.

(P-Nut) Not I. I told her about it.

(Tim) Not me.

(Chad) Yes.

(SA) No, but one time I invited our bus driver into my folks’ house for a late dinner and when he left his fat sack decided to fall on the floor. Sorry mom.

409. Will miT do more soloing on the next album? I hope so. His soloing is just off the hook.

Email: jroy311@aol.com

(Tim) There will be some solos.
————————————————————-

410. Who’s taller SA or Chad?

Email: rtt3700@yahoo.com

(Chad) I believe SA is taller by millimeters.

(SA) I would say we are about the same height, although Chad tends to wear shoes with big heels.
————————————————————-

411. How is the new album coming along?

The new album is off to a great start. We moved into a new studio for this one…so it took us a while to get set up and running – but now this place is like a home to us and we’re writing and recording new stuff almost every day.
————————————————————-

412. Have you thought of a name yet? I heard Illuminations could be an option?

We don’t have a name for the album yet. I think there’s a rumor going around about “Illuminations”. I think P-Nut said in an interview that he wanted to name a record “Illuminati” or something….that’s probably how the rumor started.
————————————————————-

413. It seems that you guys tend to have a new style on every CD, are there any new styles you are exploring for the upcoming album? I’ve heard a jungle rock hybrid could be a possibility?

(Nick) Jungle rock is a possibility. It has not yet materialized. In ourcamp, hip hop is currently having a rebirth, listening-wise. Therefore, there’s a lot of rap in our rock lately. We’ve been referring to this style as “Funkyrock.”
————————————————————-

414. Is the album still aimed at a summer 2001 release?

We’re hoping to record over the winter and then release the album in the summer – but we don’t have a release date in place.
————————————————————-

415. When ETSD came out, it was released with a four song CD. Are you planning on releasing another CD containing unreleased songs with ETSD II?

We would really like to release the same type of package with a CD and a video (on VHS & DVD).
————————————————————-

416. What songs are you planning on using for ETSD II, any outtakes?

We would probably use some outtakes or some remixes or some live stuff or instrumentals…we don’t know yet – but it would be unreleased stuff.
————————————————————-

417. Is ETSD II still scheduled for a winter 2000 release date?

That’s actually probably going to come out in 2001. I’m sorry that we keep pushing that back…but we are putting it together ourselves with our friend Brian Smith and there is so much footage to go through…we just want it to be better than ETSD so we need to take our time with it.
————————————————————-

418. Do you think it will be released on VHS and DVD this time around?

We definitely plan to release it on DVD.
————————————————————-

419. Are you planning on having another single after Large in the Margin? If so, what would you like it to be?

We don’t plan to release any more singles off of “Soundsystem”.
————————————————————-

420. You guys toured with Incubus back in ’97, and now they are huge. Are there any small bands that you think are going to hit it big? Any that are standing out?

(Nick) I think Zebrahead and 2 Skinnie J’s are both coming up strong.
————————————————————-

421. I saw the last show you played with Incubus, it was great when the guys came out and gave you hugs. How was it touring with Incubus again?

It was a lot of fun. One of the best tours we’ve ever done. Musically and personally everything just flowed. I’m sure we’ll hook up with them again in the future.
————————————————————-

422. How do you feel about their current success on MTV?

We think they deserve it.
————————————————————-

423. On 120 minutes Nick and P-Nut challenged the guys in Incubus to a rematch on the basketball court. I was wondering if you guys ever ended up playing that game?

We don’t really have to play the game…isn’t it obvious who would win?!
————————————————————-

424. I hear Zebrahead is joining the tour with you guys. (Good choice by the way!) How do you feel about touring with them? Why did you decide to go them?

We met some of the Zebrahead guys in Japan and they were really cool. We also noticed that a lot of our fans on our website bulletin board we’re saying that they would like to see a 311 – Zebrahead tour…so we put it together.
————————————————————-

425. What are you most looking forward to for the upcoming tour?

We can’t wait to get back out there and rock the crowd. Smokeout Fest in Cali and Voodoo Music Fest in New Orleans should be cool and Halloween in Atlanta and everywhere. We’re planning to play a few new songs on this tour – so all the shows should be special.
————————————————————-

426. What are you most looking forward to for the years to come?

(Nick) Right now screaming metal bands are everywhere. I’ll be interested to see what is next. Like when Nirvana came along and knocked Axl Rose into “Where Are They Now?” status, I’m looking forward to seeing who’s next. No one knows. More than that, I’m looking forward making a new record and speaking to lots of people through music, live shows, and verbally. I’m also looking forward to seeing George W. Bush not elected and I’m looking forward to hearing the next Common album. That guys a genius.
————————————————————-

427. What is the deal with the rumor of the next album title being “Illuminations”. Any truth?

Email: umd311@aol.com

(P-Nut) No we haven’t named it yet. I do think that would make a good title, but I have suggested it before to a luke warm response, which is fine, five heads are better than one.

428. Question: Where you guys involved in any sports or other activities while growing up in Omaha?

Email: CB Siffredi@aol.com

(P-Nut) I played some basketball, but I couldn’t make the team cause I was (and still am sometimes) a hothead. I did compete quite well in some track events, which I was involved with for about three years, one in junior high and then through my sophmore year as well. Mostly jumps and hurdles, but I also did some relays, but I wasn’t as good at that.

(Nick) I played football for a year. I sucked.

(SA) I played little league baseball and peewee football. My little league baseball team was the ish. We ruled. We were the champions 4 years running. Quite a dynasty for some whipper snappers. My football team on the other hand … how should I say … not so good Ralph. But still a blast. I played organized football from age 9 through 15. Then decided to play tennis. Nowadays I lift, run, ride my bike, shoot some hoop, and occasionally pick up my racket.

(Tim) I played baseball (catcher & 1st base), basketball (forward), and football(offensive guard & defensive end) growing up. I made the switch to full time Rock around 8th grade. My little league all-star team (Hillside Little League -age 12) won the Nebraska state championship in ’82(?).

(Chad) I played flag football in elementary school (center and wide receiver), but I am a huge sports fan; mostly into football and basketball.

————————————————————-
429. Question: Who are your all-time favorite bands that you have jammed with on stage?

Email: nightmarezonwax@yahoo.com

We haven’t really jammed with many other musicians on stage. I guess the most memorable situation was when John Popper from Blues Traveler joined us on stage during the Horde Tour and played the harmonica, as we jammed “Taiyed”. It was also great having Bobo come out and play percussion with us during some of the dates we did on the Cypress Hill tour.

————————————————————-
430. Question: What is the craziest thing that a fan has ever done?

Email: gmg149@psu.edu

I remember on the last tour in Philadelphia a fan dove from the upper balcony. The people down below cleared out and he hit the floor. It was not a good scene. We had to stop the show for about 15 mintues, as the ambulance came for him. We called into the hospital and miraculously he was ok. We definitely do not recommend anyone else trying it.

————————————————————-
431. Question: Who is your favorite band to go on tour with?

Email: Bananaeatsmonkey@mail.com

We’ve had so many great experiences with other bands on tour…it’s impossible to pick a favorite. On the inside of the Live album we thank a lot of the bands that we’ve done shows with. You should check that list out (also at archive #154). The last tour we did was with Incubus and that was great. We love having those guys on the road with us.

————————————————————-
432. Question: Will the new home movie be available on DVD with enhanced sound like Dolby Digital and DTS?

Email: ucdjimmy@hotmail.com

We’re definitely going to release it on DVD, but we don’t know when and we don’t know what kind of special features it will have yet.

————————————————————-
433. Question: What kinds of jobs are available in working for the band, and what goes into being eligible?

Email: katherine@hotmail.com

We don’t really have any jobs available within our organization right now. All of the people we have on the road with us are touring industry professionals who have been on numerous tours with lots of other bands. We’ve got a great road crew that keep the tour running smooth.

————————————————————-
434. Question: What is in everyone’s cd collection that they have to listen to on the road?

Email: Stan91383@aol.com

(P-Nut) Lots of Tom Waits, Curtis Mayfield, Ween and many funk discs.

(Nick) I’ve been listening to the new albums from Common (my favorite right now), Roni Size, De La Soul, Deftones, and U2.

(SA) My CD collection on the road is pretty simple (primarily because it’s the last thing I remember to pack) But basically it consists of mix CD’s I’ve made which will have some reggae and hip-hop flavors, as well up tempo electro and chill out textures.

(Tim): A little bit of everything I enjoy listening to… Nashville puss*, NOFX, Pantera, Bob Marley, John Scofield, lots of Jerry and Carlos, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rev. Horton Heat, Pennywise, Black Eye Peas, History of Jamaican Music box set, Wu Tang Clan, Phish, Willie Nelson, Tool, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Django Reinhardt, Jane’s Addiction, Bad Brains, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Aphex Twin, various DJ Lofton and DJ Beat mixes… lots and lots of cds. And there are tons more.

(Chad) Bad Brains, Deftones, Black Eye Peas, Aphex Twin, Roni Size….

————————————————————-
435. Question: What is the most beautiful thing you guys have ever witnessed?

Email: Transistor310plus1@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) My fiance’ dancing in front of me the first and second night that I met her.

(Nick) The feeling I had when Joe Strummer of the Clash walked on stage with his bleach blonde mohawk. It was pure joy. I was 14.

(SA) I couldn’t name one thing, but I love watching my nephews and niece. They are so fun and hilarious. Same with Jen, Pablo, and Irie.

(Tim) The stars (billions?) in the night sky from the outback of Australia.

(Chad) Excitable energy from my dogs.

————————————————————-
436. Question: What was the hardest task to overcome individually when y’all first came together?

Email: frankie@buttfunk.com

(P-Nut) Well, when I was first in the band we had a different guitar player and he was my best friend. And I knew after working together for a little under a year that it wasn’t going remain the same, too much butting of heads. So one day, I had to call up Jimi and tell him that he wasn’t in the band anymore, one of the hardest things I have ever had to do.

(Nick) The hardest thing we’ve ever done was to get rap/rock treated as a real art form. It wasn’t on the radio when we started.

(Tim) The decision to rock for life.

(Chad) Financially to make it work as a living.

————————————————————-
437. Question: I read a book called “Rule of the Bone”, which SA once suggested in a magazine article. Can you guys suggest any other good books to read?

Email: jdawson2@niu.edu

(P-Nut) “Illuminatus Trilogy” By Robert Anton Wilson. “Promethus Rising” also by BOB, “Up the Line” by Robert Silverberg, and any biography on Stanley Kubrick.

(Nick) “Come As You Are” (the story of Nirvana)

(SA) Man, for all you music lovers I must recommend “Last Night A DJ Saved My Life” Kenisha Perkins gave it to me. It documents the history of the DJ, club culture, and the roots of all this great dance music. Wicked.

(Tim) I always recommend “Cosmic Trigger” by Robert Anton Wilson. Lots of good information and knowledge in there. Then try his “Quantum Pschology.” Smart M.F’r.

(Chad) “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.

————————————————————-
438. Question: P-Nut, are you self taught? I am learning bass, would it help to get lessons? I’ve heard many of the best bassist are self taught.

Email: bad_mo_joe@joymail.com

(P-Nut) I took lessons for years, about four, and wouldn’t trade those hours with my teachers for anything. I did learn just as much on my own, but the combination of philosophies made me the bass player I am today.

————————————————————-
439. Question: What is the best advice each one of you could give someone, in general?

Email: messyfloor@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) Tackle your dreams and do what you want for a living, there’s nothing like it.

(Nick) Come Original.

(SA) In all things have patience.

(Tim) Trust your instincts.

(Chad) Stay positive and in tough or hard situations change your perspective; look at your situation from different angles, put it into a new light and make it better.

Also see Archive question #278 .

————————————————————-
440. Question: Have you all found it difficult to keep such a positive outlook/focus even though there has been a push towards angst/anger in music. At what point did you all focus your energy on making music that was uplifting?

Email: tobiasbouska@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) In the beginning it was tough for me to accept that I was in a positive band, cause I was listening to the angst music myself, and almost nothing else, but over the years, I see how good it is to be on the light side. Helps me sleep at night, knowing that we make people think before they go out and do some stupid sh*t.

(Nick) It was never a conscious effort to be positive. It just came naturally. I would be embarrassed to constantly complain about my life considering all the freedom and opportunities we have today. People that can’t find anything they enjoy in life simply aren’t giving it a real try. Keep in mind that I don’t walk around happy all the time. Positivity doesn’t always come easily to me, or anyone. My lyrics come largely out of the struggle to stay positive in the face of adversity. I’m just being real about it.

I wouldn’t say that people who are expressing anguish in there music are not valid. For example Jonathan Davis is obviously venting some very real pain from things that happened in his life. When he sings, I feel what he’s saying. He’s a great artist. I just object to all the Korn clones who are all trying to act more mentally ill than everyone else. It can’t all be real. It doesn’t ring true. It looks more like fashion to me. Heavy metal with new hair-do’s.

(SA) It’s not difficult for me to keep a positive outlook. I’m grateful for my health and spiritual well being and I give thanks to a lot of great music that has helped shape me this way. I don’t think there was any question that this wasn’t something I wanted to reflect in music. These are the vibes that continue to inspire me.

(Tim) We have always focused on making music. Music of all kinds inspires us, but anger/angst music has never interfered or made it difficult for us to keep a positive outlook. Positive mental attitude has always been a goal of ours. We play music from our hearts for life and hope it affects people in a positive way.

(Chad) Yes it’s hard for someone to always maintain a positive attitude. That’s why it is such a challenge, it’s much easier to be negative. However we have chosen to always write music that is inspiring to us and that makes us feel good and happy. We also hope it inspires others.

————————————————————-
441. Question: What inspired you all to be muscisians?

Email: burntwister220@aol.com

(P-Nut) Music and wanting to be a part of it.

(Nick) My dad’s rock and roll 45’s from the 50’s. Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Bill Hailey, and Buddy Holly. My dad taught me all about the culture, dancing, cars, and clothes of the era.

(Tim) For as long as I can remember I’ve always loved playing music. Started on tennis racket playing Kiss songs, then trombone in school band, and finally the guitar when I started wanting to play the punk/ metal music I was listening to.

(Chad) My parents were musicians and I was always surrounded by music.

442. Question: I found Transistor to have the most meaning and depth. I found Soundsystem to be at the surface and a lot of fun. I love both of these albums, but how did you seem to go to these two different sounds?

Email: memmesej@notes.udayton.edu

(Nick) I find your interpretation different from mine. I have never written more personally deep songs than Eons, Flowing, or Large in the Margin. I was dealing with serious lack of direction and self doubt at that time.

————————————————————-
443. Question: Nick, did you guys have alot of trouble getting signed at first or was it smooth sailing?

Email: Patdninja@aol.com

(Nick) Honestly, the only smooth sailing I can remember is the last one year and three months. We’ve been very united and focused during this time. ’95-’96 was a good era as well.

————————————————————-
444. Question: Hey P-Nut, is a 5 string bass hard to play or the same as an 4 string bass?

Email: sitm89@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) Well, of course you have more notes on a five string, but all in all, it’s really not that different. It’s only as hard as you make it. With practice and lots of it, bass can be very easy…but controlling the notes and nailing them everytime you play them, that’s the hard part and it will be equally hard on a four or a five.

————————————————————-
445. Question: This question is for Nick- when you were in high school, what were some jazz charts that you and Chad performed in the jazz combo? What level jazz did you guys play back in the day?

Email: Gregg7834@yahoo.com

(Nick) I played whatever songs our teacher Mr. Groth would present to us. That whole experience helped me a lot. I wish I would have practice more but I was too busy being punk rock.

————————————————————-
446. Question: I know when im feeling down, 311 always puts me in the best mood, but what do the positive rock gods of 311 listen to when they are a little down?

Email: InQbutt420x@aol.com

(P-Nut) Curtis Mayfield, Ween, almost any music makes me feel like my problems are tiny as sand.

(Nick) If I’m depressed I would listen to Chet Baker, Billie Holliday, or The Smiths.

(SA) I listen to my dogs.

(Tim) When I’m depressed, Bob Marley, Jerry Garcia, and especially Pantera help this brother out.

(Chad) I listen to Bad Brains and Bob Marley.

————————————————————-
447. Question: What would be your one guilty pleasure?

Email: Csojka@hotmail.com

(P-Nut) Becoming part of my couch when we are home from the road.

(Nick) Red Bulls! I keep thinking all the caffiene might cause high blood pressure, but my doctor says I’m cool.

(SA) Dessert. Cookies and milk.

(Tim) Only one? I try not to act in ways for which I’ll feel guilty. One unguilty pleasure: lighting my farts.

(Chad) Chocolate.

————————————————————-
448. Question: When 311 first started out, what was the very first guitar/bass/drum kit that each member of 311 had?

Email: sorry lost it

(P-Nut) I had a Phantom P bass and a Gibson amp, but before that I played violin for about four years and guitar for about six weeks, cause they didn’t have any beginner bass lessons.

(Nick) I had a Peavey guitar and practice amp combo that my parents bought me for my 12th birthday.

(Tim) The first guitar I ever owned was from a catalog of some nature…Sears, I think. First amp: Peavey.

(Chad) At age four, I got a four-piece red sparkle Sonar set as a gift from a friend of my parents.

————————————————————-
449. Question: Who do you thank most for your success?

Email: britty1179@go.com

(P-Nut) My mother and brother. Both being such help in pushing me to do whatever I wanted.

(Nick) Fans, bandmates/crew/management, parents. All tied for first place!!!!!!!!

(SA) I thank my brothers in 311 along with my family.

(Tim) I thank Nick, Chad, SA, and P-Nut the most for our success.

(Chad) Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney, P-Nut, SA, Adam and Peter.

————————————————————-
450. Question: When you write music, how do you figure out each element of the song and how they are best put together? Do you sit at a piano? With a guitar? Sing melodies and harmony? All or none of these? Do you write it down on music scores?

Email: cstooker@ncounty.net

(Nick) We don’t write out music scores. Other than that we use all of the methods you listed in various occasions. Such as, singing acapella and then making music to go under it or writing the music first on guitar, bass, or piano. Lately I find it best to write the music, lyrics, and melody all at once.

————————————————————-
451. Question: I have a quick question regarding “Grassroots”. I know there are 3 different covers to the cd…
large logo in the middle w/ grassroots under it
small logo w/ grassroots on the bottom
small logo w/ grassroots on top
I was wondering if you could tell me what the difference is (if any) and which one is the most rare/early edition?

Email: slinkie311girl@hotmail.com

The “small logo w/ grassroots on the bottom” was first cover. The “large logo in the middle w/ grassroots under it” was second cover. The “small logo w/ grassroots on top” was third cover. The band approved the first cover and was very happy with it. However, the label thought that the logo was too small. The label was also concerned that since the logo was at the bottom – you could not see it when the cd was in a bin at the record stores. So the label wanted to change the cover. The band did not want to. Then the label released the second cover without the band’s approval – and the band was really upset about it. The label claimed it was a misprint and that it was never supposed to be released like that. So, they compromised and made the third cover. I don’t know for sure which one is the most rare…either the first or second cover. Probably the second.
